Please re iterate the point of a moderator Colin or Robin?

I was of the understanding that they would set a precedent for the community of IC ... Sadly I see some of them as shadows and endorsements of rude behaviour.

It's not a good look, only my opinion but as I'm receiving emails that aren't even relevant to threads I've subscribed too, may I suggest you Play leader and tell some of your moderators that to put others down was not the intention of the power you vested in them.

You hoped they would help You in stopping people trashing others.

I'll be turning my email subscription off, that should eliminate my problem.

What are you going to do about yours?

Kindest regards and I wish you and your families well.

Julles

Julles,
Thanks for the feedback. Robin and I are the moderators. Perhaps we have dropped a few catches and let through a few posts that should have been deleted. No one, including the moderators, are exempt from the forum rules. If you have a complaint about a specific post, please forward this to me.

Regards,
Colin

... Unlike the position of Moderator on other forums, IC is unique, Julles.

The position is not that of Moderator, it is actually that of Advisory Panel Member, and as such, is honorary, and voluntary.

Frankly, I could do without it. It is tedious having to look over my shoulder every time I want to have a whinge, or post something cynical, tongue-in-cheek, controversial, challenging, or just different.

The Julles' of the world are ever there, waiting to deride anyone who has accepted the call to be a volunteer, and snipe away, trying to gain personal Brownie Points just for noticing that a few panel members got involved in an exchange of opinions.

As you may have noticed, it did not degenerate into a personal slanging match, but like most males with their tentacles functioning and intact, we seemed to have settled the differences without female assistance (again).

When did Colin, Robin, or any of the Panel ever receive any gratitude for taking the difficult decisions? There have been some, I can assure you, and there are many occasions where decisions are not unanimous.

The Advisory Panel has to put aside personal bias - let's face it squarely, no one gets on well with everyone - and treat each situation as fairly, and openly as we can.

The Julles of old would have been positive, congratulatory, compassionate and appreciative.

Since you have been cooking for another outfit, your personal charisma has copped a lashing - too much people-pleasing, Julles. You've changed - not for the better.

Get back to your old, informative, friendly, contributory self, please.

My position on the panel is up for the taking - you are welcome to it.

To other panel members: I offered first - if there is someone willing to move onto the Advisory Panel, I get first choice at vacating a position.

Keep Smiling

Colin I thank you for picking up my meaning concerning moderation.

Trashy stuff just shouldn't be aloud in my opinion, no matter what thread we are on.

I've enjoyed what you have created with your forum for conversing about charts.

I for one have strayed from the norm in conversation but always within the group. Traders Groups.

I do read other forums and sometimes I contribute, but I fear it is the reprimand of folk for posting Outside of my Square

Simply, I am not jealous of the folk chosen to be on the panel. I just don't believe there should be a panel.

It segregates the community into ..... Thou are Blessed for thou opinion

This subject is controversial I know and I'm not posting to stir the pot. I just want you to think about it in the broder context.

Julles

It is my understanding that panel membership will be rotated on an annual basis with one or more current members retiring

In the meantime everyone has the ability to be an Adviser by making vigorous and constructive use of the Feedback Forum and your views are as worthy of consideration as those of every Forum Member

Not every view here or within the Panel is accepted by The Moderator(s), but the more views that are offered responsibly here in Feedback the better

With Best Wishes

Hilarious, I realised from simply responding to my statement, ie the thread name that it wouldn't suit all folks.

I am deeply concerned and despondent about the behaviour conducted by respected members of this community and I choose to let it be known.

I have met you , and I do believe now that I misjudged you, I never saw you as one to pick on anyone!!!

Recent behaviour on particular threads dictates differently.

Oh dear Claudious, Please tell me you didn't mean to be cruel! I've lost faith in the empire dear Sir.

Unfortuneatley Colin and Robin

I Will Not be Able to do my Time in volunteer work within your biding, because I solidly believe I do the work of the time when I come back to this forum time and time again and contribute.

Just being myself.

Again I stress the panel thingy has changed contributors personality, just look at Spiders lack of posts, Suzi Q won't say boo, Ingot know's everything about everything to everyone, Hilarious has to justify all the panel members reasoning.

I believe having formulated the panel of moderators , oops sorry panel members, it's actually created ultra personalities amongst the chosen few. Some and I'm seeing 3 lately have not chosen to post at all.

In my opinion Colin it's just not going to work.

Julles

I accept your criticism which I know was meant to be constructive

Sometimes when I express a strong view people disagree strongly and my reply to that is taken personally by them

I've never had an intention to hurt anyone, but one person took my strong statements personally

I will try to do better, by going back to posting charts and staying off hot topics

My idea of moderating...

Get rid of the "panel" of moderators and let the IC community moderate.

Add a button to the posts which allow users to identify a post that they believe requires moderator attention. The user picks from a list of rules that the post breaks. The post is highlighted as "Under Review".

Enforce the forum rules and delete a post that has any hint of breaking them. The post is replaced with the rule that it broke.

Possibly, having the community highlight posts that need attention would make the work of a moderator easier.

G'day All
It seems a pity that there can't be made a 'rule' outlawing 'sycophants' ie 'sucking up' (my definition) and posters who continually make 'commentary' on others' posts with no redeeming 'positives'.

Redbellie

An alert button is a good idea, but it can also be open to abuse

As we see in some reality programmes original thinkers and unusual personalities (Dug comes to mind) can often be excluded by group-think or undermined by other strong personalities

Fairness is an issue, therefore

At the very least someone using an alert button should be prepared to cite the rule in question and provide their view on the matter, so they have done a little homework before complaining

Zorba, do you have any examples? Unspecified charges are not really useful but evidence is

With Best Wishes

Hilarius

Good effort redbellie!

I personally am tired of having "bickering" and "bitching" emails to read.

My suggestion would be to have the poster's name included in the "subject" of all incoming emails so that all of us could just delete them without opening their "contribution". Afterall there are many reasoned and reasonable posters on this forum, those whose only interest is to be helpful and provide viewpoints about TA to the betterment of the forum. Surely we can choose to only read them.

We all know who the "BnB" s are. Give us the ability to "just one click and they're gone."

We can't make rules to solve all our problems. The really persistent just try to manipulate new rules, bit like "creative accounting."

Hilarius,

An alert button is a good idea, but it can also be open to abuse

Yes true but the moderator must view the post, the reason for it being highlighted and make the final decision if a rule is broken.

At the very least someone using an alert button should be prepared to cite the rule in question and provide their view on the matter

Yes definitely a good idea - a spot to enter more optional info beside ticking "the rule".

While using a "panel" of moderators is beaut, a point is:-

What may mean a personal attack to one person, another person may brush it off and not care. We are all different and if anyone finds a post is breaking a rule, why shouldn't it be deleted. It's not as if anyone's posts here are THAT important is it? I think it may make people more thoughtful of words chosen and the make the rules very clear.

It's just my thoughts on observations from visiting sites using the above setup. They make it a good place to visit - although from what I've seen here ....pretty tame! :-)

Cheers, RB

I have resisted entering this thread as I didn't believe I could value add.

However as someone who has born the brunt of much verbal abuse on this forum by original thinkers and unusual personalities (Dug comes to mind) , amongst others.....mostly from the area of the Advisory Panel Members. Those who obviously felt it was their right and duty to be abusive and dismissive of others and to form a mutual admiration society for each other and those who ingratiated themselves to their inner sanctum.

It saddens me when I see great minds like Bundy's throwing their hands up in the air and leaving the forum in disgust.

Yet people who are perfectly capable of normal speech but choose to affect an almost incomprehensible style of attention seeking utterance, are free to wander the threads being rude, abusive and insulting to whomever they please, obviously condoned and encourage by the Advisory Panel Members.

Perhaps a rotation of Advisory Panel Members would be a good way of breaking the negative culture which has pervaded this Forum for some time now.

I am not perfectly capable of normal speech or writing.
The problem that I see is that this Forum is dominated by people who have cliqued up in Real Life and this gives them some right in their mind to virtually control this Forum.

Their Reality and that they are Long Time Buddies and Chums allows any one of their own to do,act, write, comment,DOMINATE
'cos He/she/it is a great bloke/charming sheila.
Understand how THEY think,They Can Do no Wrong.
so because you got a free cup of Coffee and DIRECT Access,
you turn all your negativity on Outsiders. There is a real element that decides WHO they deign to reply to here and well,I'm not into THAT!! I Protest!

That's why an Outsider, even as far out as Msparks should be on d'Panel !!
Where did this idea that the Panel was for wiping the Floor of me,come from?LOL or rather lol.
As i've said before,if you DISH it expect a comeround.

Happy Trading,
jr

OK if there was a rule "OFF TOPIC", I would tick a few posts above NOW. that's if (being an IC community member) I could select posts as being against rules.

An idea ...if there was a group of moderators, whoever was online at the time could be alerted and review/delete these OFF TOPIC posts immediately.

Too many if's aye! :-)

Good Luck.

Instead of twiddle deeing around down here, why not go up to the top board and give Jimdene a bit of a hand guys.

Community spirit and all.

Who the hell shot Bundy anyway
Bundy was a favorite of mine, always so well spoken and professional in his approach to the forum.
Every time i see that name i think of the bundy bear rum adds on TV and he is just so cool, just like our Bundy was
oops,was i being a syfocount

Apologies to all for being a bit naughty lately.
Must be the fearful frustration and fruitless following of a frightful plan.

Mark,

As I understand the situation regarding Bundy's request to have his account cancelled was due to Bundy's long running and total frustration with one of the Advisory Panel Members.

As far as you choosing to believe I am wombat or whoever....feel free, it makes no difference to me either way.

It has been a long standing joke that jr, wombat's best mate was constantly trying to get wombat to say he was me, in order to lift his credibility. Feel free to ask Hershy, he has been involved in the joke for ever as well.

Just ask yourself this...if I am wombat and wombat was jr's best mate, that in turn would imply I have a close relationship with Dug.

If you can see any evidence of this....good o.

Ann

In the big scheme of things my discussion with Bundy was fairly short lived, and I was not engaging with him in my capacity as a Panel Advisory Member but as my own self

As I understand it Panel Advisory members are not forbidden from from participating in vigorous discussion, but I would certainly accept that it would be best if they generally could set a good example

I was surprised when Bundy took his bat and ball and decided not to play any more

Perhaps I was a little tired and did not read the signs of his disillusion properly ... personally I found the discussion interesting and even constructive and thought Bundy was doing a good job of making it constructive until he spat the dummy

Any Forum Member is more than welcome to apply to replace me on the Panel

With Best Wishes

Hilarius

I too regret Bundy leaving the Forum, we have had so many brilliant people become fed up and move on.

Repeating myself but I can only see an improvement in this forum by a change in the Advisory Panel. Sadly the majority of the best people have probably been lost to us now.

The Forum does not appear to have the ability to retain the best people.

They eventually become frustrated, disenchanted sick of trying to get intelligence to prevail and just move on.

Ann

If you are going to make charges of that kind you should substantiate them

Sweeping statements about the work of the Advisory Panel without evidence do not assist

Where is your evidence? Could it be that you have the moderators/panel to thank for the tolerance which has been extended to you?

Biting the hand that has ensured your ability to be here hardly seems grateful

With Best Wishes

Earlier posts from Julles and RedBellie were constructive, but we battled to stay on topic.

Julles,
We hear your criticism and will do our best to guard against the development of super egos.
(1) The panel was set up to help me -- I find it difficult and time consuming to review every spat that arises and attempt to arrive at a fair decision. The panel have helped a great deal in providing their own views and reasoning in a number of difficult cases. The number of split decisions reassures me that they are not a clique, nor engaged in group-think.
(2) Membership of the panel is a burden, assumed by a few members for the benefit of all, and carries no prestige or privileges. I would like to express my appreciation to panel members for their assistance.
(3) Rotation of panel members was discussed at the outset and will be considered annually.
(4) Panel members are entitled to express their own opinions provided they comply with forum rules.

Redbellie,
We cannot introduce an alert button (the software does not cater for this), but if you find a post that you object to, please send me a link.

Regards,
Colin

Colin,
Is this suggestion possible?

http://forum.incrediblecharts.com/messages/104/725563.html#POST86463

If so could its implementation be considered?
For someone only interested in thoughtful analysis it's something I've considered requesting for some time.

John,

Thanks for bringing your suggestion to our attention. I was not aware of it and it definitely has merit. I'll see what I can come up with.

Robin,
Thanks for your prompt action -for awhile I thought I'd become invisible. What you've managed was a very pleasant surprise to start the day.
I've noted a couple of other thoughtful adjustments which certainly wouldn't diminish the usefulness of the exercise if implemented.
Thanks again.

Good stuff Colin!

The easier you can make it for a user to report a dodgy post the better. People are more likely to be bothered doing it!

Just a couple of ideas. I think it should'nt be mandatory to give a written explanation for a post alert, but an option. A tick box for each rule and a space for "other" reason where you can type in. Forcing the "alertee" to write a story about the reason may stop them from doing it.

It would be good to add the rule broken to the deleted post for everyone to see why - which may make people think twice about posting further rubbish.

I really don't know how the current group of "Advisory Panel" work but you mention above, if the panel have "to review every spat that arises and attempt to arrive at a fair decision" then I would think this would take some time. The quicker these posts disappear, the less likely there will be follow up rubbish posted and make the moderating easier.

The only other thing about this, I'm also not sure about the posts being emailed out. I suppose deleting alerted posts after the fact won't stop them being emailed. That other idea above of adding the username to the subject is beaut!

Redbellie

Your definition of "rubbish" may not be everyone's

At the very least you have an obligation to describe what you regard as "rubbish", and why

Freedom of speech is something that people have been willing to die for

It is not for you to seek to censor the strong opinions of others unless you can at least provide some substance to support your condemnation of their right to speak

If a rule has been broken that is different ... and you have an obligation not only to identify the rule but the offence of which you are speaking and its seriousness in your eyes

Demanding action without giving reasons is unreasonable

With Best Wishes

RB: Yes it is tiresome receiving what you may consider 'rubbish' posts because you are linked to a thread. But it really doesn't take much to skim over an email post and delete it. I do it everyday. I can easily determine what I want to read, what will have value for me and my interests.

Let people write what they want to write. Providing it is kept within set boundaries (the rules) then all is OK. We report when these rules are broken and appropriate steps are taken to curtail the activity.

Having 500 hundred extra rules of post explanations, disclaimers etc etc, only makes participation in a forum like this annoying and not worth the effort. We are all here to learn something, share something and perhaps involve ourselves in some though provoking arguments/discussions. We are all different, and will have our 'spats' with each other, how we handle these situations is what makes us all adults.

Read, share, argue, agree, disagree, forgive, ignore... welcome to a forum. Enjoy!

Hilarius,
"At the very least you have an obligation to describe what you regard as "rubbish", and why"

Ooooooops, yes your right. Sorry, I should'nt have used the word "rubbish" at all.

Swap the word "rubbish" above for: "posts outside of The Rules".

The Rules being:
http://forum.incrediblecharts.com/chart_forum_rules.htm

davkell,
"it really doesn't take much to skim over an email post and delete it."

Agree, but I was making suggestions regarding Julles concerns. Observations from visiting other sites using moderating like I mentioned seems to work well. Doesn't mean it would here.

Regards, RB

Ahoy Admiral Col'n
You seem to be on the right tack on this one

HOWEVER
What should not be forgotten is
"The Private e-mails"

If you are as slack as I am you never get around to reading all your mail

"Private e-mails" should be included in any revamp as a matter of "Urgency"
A "Special ALERT" of some kind???

Maybe just a secret colour code could do the job?

Colin,

Identify the rule?

Other than what is in the chart forum rules, what about one or two of the following:

• No racism, sexism, ageism and religious intolerance
• No off-topic
• No illegal content and activities
• No abuse, insults or personal attacks
• No foul language
• No pointless posting sprees
• No inappropriate or illegal material
• No business advertising
• No forum spamming
• No defamatory and libel comments
• No complaints about moderation

Copied of course! :-)

Hi msparks,

I see "The bad" came out in front today!

Have you any idea how fantastic it feels to see "The bad" and not care? You have had that feeling from "The bad" many times, now you know, you expect it and you bath in it!

I see time to bank profits, not "The bad".

RB

Edit: slap my wrist, talking trading. Forgot your question! The planet I'm from is this planet right here:

It's probably the biggest planet us Aussies have.

Hi Redbellie black snake

109,048 members on your forum.
Why would this many people want to talk on line about washing machines, der.

IC has 126,000 users times $/mth and you would not have to work for long, right.

PS - Are you a paying member of IC Charts ?

I thought I remembered you, redbellie but I might be Wrong but weren't you sprouting for Joe Salmon somewhere here months ago?Something about Insiders and the use of Option moves blahx3?
Have you actually ever posted Anything on a share with a chart? If you have I must of missed it.Looking forward to your next effort.

As a complete aside, completely off topic I saw a redbellie black snake today.First one in years.Redbellies aren't really all that poisonous, just make you sick if ya get caught of course.
The thing about snakes, boys'n'girls is to not go chasing after them. It's better if you don't want them dead.Just leave them alone.I was nearly bit by a redbellie once, stepped on it in some creek bank sac-sac grass but well,it's a pretty boring story so...
I'm off.

edit-I was wrong it wasn't you redbellie doing it by Joe,seems it was some raindog dude.Apologies but that means none of your posts have 'Stuck',which is not surprising hey?me being so vacant'n'incomprehensible.Right?

Perfect, Colin.

{your recent forum announcement, that is}

Just saw the Johnny Cash movie and loved it but one of the songs is "Walk the Line". I mention this because I think we can easily/happily abide by Colin's rules/line without restricting our ability to participate, learn, help others and engage in discussions where not everyone agrees.

This "ill wind" that has swept through some areas of the forum has indeed [with recent changes] done some good.

As a freeloader I am in the guilty party brigade.
Not using the "charts" of IC to any degree I would willingly donate to a charity of Colin's choosing.
In keeping with the passion of this forum maybe Colin can pick a monthly cause dedicated to men's health issues.
We can probably forego erectile dysfunction and move straight to IBS. That way when another poster gives you the shits, it is comforting to know that your pain is not in vain.

Then it could all be downhill, like Telstra. At least you can see the potential upside as IC is constantly improved and people find that it better fills their needs.
