Well as my name suggests I’m new to this game. I have been reading Fin Review for over 2 years and through the ads that have been appearing in them have decided to sniff around and investigate more. I am going to a seminar 27/2/7 by Prof Price on his theory in the study of "Buffett". He seems to have a few positive articles written about him from well known independent news papers and fellow intellects, they all seem impressive. What are people’s thoughts on this guy??? I am gathering as much info as possible on investing as it is something I would like to do full time down the track. Are books such as "The Intelligent Investor" by Graham or "Trading for a Living" by Elder good places to start?
I am also open to any other recommendations of other books that may be more beneficial to a novice whom would like to get serious about the industry but dont know where to start.
My only experience to date was buying 1300 Telstra shares for $7.40 when they bloody floated. I still have da stupid things.
Also I just attended a "Gryphon Learning" seminar there was about 35 pax there. We were all invited to bring our shares along to the evening in order to demonstrate there Phoenix system and I must say that it did look impressive with everyone’s trades, however through researching the company there is not much on them compared to Professor Price. Also is the "Australian Shareholders Association" a non profit group beneficial?? Not sure as this website seems pretty damn helpful.
Ok that’s enough rambling for one post. Look forward in hearing yr thoughts and views.
Yeehaa

Hi Cowboy & welcome,
I can't help much re professor Price but I too have seen the ads for his seminars. WHo's paying for all that, I wonder? The people who attend must be buying something expensive, I think. I've been to several of these 'things' and been pressured (sometimes for a year afterwards) to BUY.

At the end of the day you have to have your own strategy and investing plan and no seminar will give that to you, although a few (very few ) may provide some worthwhile ideas that you can incorporate into it. As Graham points out many strategies work until they become widely accepted and then they don't provide above market returns anymore - logical really. In any case it is difficult to find the kind of value in this market that Buffet looks for - I doubt that he's a buyer currently - at least I haven't found any since last April.

As far as books have a look at Colin's recommended reading list. I have just finished Weinstein's Secrets for profiting in bull and bear markets and can recommend it as a useful tome for employing technical analysis suited to the current market conditions.

You might also consider this site as the most useful I have found and a good learning tool for me has been the weekly stock selection comp under the short term thread. My ability to identify potential upmoves has improved significantly thru participation and analysing others picks - if I could just get exits better!

Good luck in your search anyway and hope to see you posting in the comp.

Phil
ps If you are using internet sites for info beware the ramping on other sites although there is probably some here they do clamp down on it.

Good Morning

Is anyone at IC a subscriber?

If so what does it provide than can not already be obtained here?

cowboy

"Trading for a Living" by Elder is an excellent place to start in my opinion. This book give a great coverage of technical trading and has a couple of good trading systems in it.

Also I agree with Lucky_phil get a copy of 'Secrets for profiting in bull and bear markets' and you won't go far wrong.

Phil
