Took mrs spider out for dinner tonight, and it got me thinking that spider spends a lot of time in these types of places so, why not list a few of the better ones for those poor deprived people who do not live in Melbourne, but might be lucky enough to one day visit. So feel free to chime in. These are not in any particular order, but here goes with the first. Moody Blue. It's in Upwey (main street, turn off Burwood Hwy) in the Dandenong Ranges. Small place, young chef, excellent tucker (do yourself a favour and try the lamb shanks). Small but good quality wine list. Warm in winter. Very good, personal service. Not cheap, but good value. Heaps of parking. Tables inside and out. Limited spirits but they do have Jameson's, no Chivas unfortunately, but I'm working on it. One of mrs spider's favourites. spider. .

spider, Melbourne? No mention of Vlado's? I never visit Melbourne without at least one meal at Vlado's, even if I have to dine at 6PM because they are booked out. Cheers MidGe

Everyone has there favourite pizza place. Ptony's on Clarendon St. Taxi drivers love the place. Our trading group was born there. Friendly service, excellent pizza and pasta, coffee is good. Albert Park referees haunt the place. Beer and wine as well. For desert go a few doors up to The Old Papershop deli (open late), for the best (possibly the only) chocolate ripple cake in Melbourne. Midge, I hate to admit it but I don't know where Vlados is. spider. .

PASTA JUNCTION. Burke Rd Camberwell. Hands down, the best past anywhere. They make their own. Wide range of sauces. Changed hands recently, but the quality seems to be holding up. Many a good trade has been celebrated here. spider. .

While we are on the subject of Brunswick St. This is one of the great Streets in Melbourne, more easy going than Lygon St (although I love Lygon St also). Two places............... Cafe Endis. Relatively cheap (for Brunswick St) tucker. Excellent service. This is a day time venue. Good atmosphere. It is on the corner of Elizabeth St. Being on a corner, it has a great outlook. I remember siting there one day, a few years ago, staring out the window on one of those great grey Melbourne winter's day. There was a beautiful old white Jag parked across the road. I watched it for about twenty minutes until a couple got into it and drove away. I remember thinking how lucky they were to own such a beautiful car. I'd been out of work for a long time, and not very well. But that day was a very positive one for me and I can remember it like it was yesterday. If you are out there, and the world has not been kind to you lately, remember dreams do come true if you are determined! I used to come here after I finished work on Smith St (back when I was rebuilding my trading pool). I love to go back there these days, park my car out the front and remember how lucky I am. THE HIDEOUT. Also on Brunswick St. Way down the end away from the city. This place is open during the day and late at night. It is a lot less pretentious than some of the other places on this street. Heaps of laminex and chrome. Groovey music, good service. spider. .

Hotel Spencer. On Spencer St , of course. Wanted to take mrs spider to the opera tonight, but dates were wrong in the paper, so no opera for us tonight. To cheer up mrs spider we went to the dinning room at Hotel Spencer. Until recently it was the only Hotel in Melbourne with a 'Chefs Hat'. Our trading group had a night here a while ago. The tucker is very good, but getting on to expensive. Small room with open fire in winter. The room has a good feel. Excellent service from Danni (a girl), she kinda runs the dining room. Plenty of parking. Excellent wine list.

The CAMEO cinema in Belgrave reopened on the 26th of December. It was built in 1935 and has been part of the hills community ever since. The most recent owners, Palace, did not have much of an idea of how to manage it and eventually closed it because of the 1.3 million cinemas that were installed at Knox. The new owner bought and renovated the Classic in Elsternwick in '97. This bloke is right on the ball! He has worked out the right mix of films to show, including 'art house'. Four cinemas now with an outdoor (on the roof) to be opened soon. Add to this the excellent surprise of a first class cafe (cafe Reel) and you have a complete package. The cafe has excellent food and top class service. The spider family is seriously impressed! .
