Spotting a trend before other investors do, can lead to nice profits. But where does one look? Martin Roth, in his book "Sector Investing" published in 2002, introduces the reader to "Theme Investing". It is well worth getting to your library to borrow this one, or even purchasing for your own library. In an examination of the new ASX sectors, Roth gives a very clear picture of each, and the major players in each sector. More importantly, in the second section of the book, he opens the readers eyes to future trends and possibilities. What is a theme? Our aging society is one, according to Roth. He says "Statistics suggest that over the coming 30 years the number of Australians aged 65 or over, will steadily double to around 5 million people, or more than a fifth of the total population." This will lead to demand for retirement accommodation, health facilities for the aged etc etc. He mentions other themes - world energy, corporate restructuring, technology, the electronic economy, and the new consumer. In addition, he mentions 5 mega-trends : Demographics Globalisation The environmental imbalance The digital revolution The withdrawal of government I won't spoil the reading for you by revealing more, but I will close by giving one of his tips, to investors in future trends. He says "The internet is immensely attractive to those who are interested in trends that will affect our futures, and if you surf around, you can find the sites of a wide range of visionaries and futurologists." Try these : www.gbn.org www.trendsearch.com www.faithpopcorn.com www.arlingtoninstitute.com To further whet your appetite, the headings for the last 7 chapters in his book are : 1. The Ageing Society 2. Biotechnology 3. Globalisation 4. Technology and the Internet 5. The Environment 6. Outsourcing 7. Ethical Stocks Overall, an easy, informative read, and highly recommended.
If you don't have it, maybe someone else does - never be afraid to ask
