Just wondering if anyone subscribes (or has in the past) to Australian Stock Report. I've been with them now for about 6 months and have pretty mixed feelings. Any thoughts? .. cheers

Hi Tommo, I'm weaning myself off other people's views on which stocks to trade - especially 'expert' opinions, so perhaps I'm a little biased. ASR has a connection with CMC and I had a trial period of ASR after I attended a CMC CFD introductory evening in late April. I didn't often trade their Derivatives recommendations. The advice came too late for me most days and I had the impression it probably worked best for those subscribers who used their additional mobile phone advice service. None of their Derivative or other forms of recommendations ever seemed to use the same TA indicators twice. This apparent lack of commonality or system across their analysts put me off somewhat as well. There was a big price hike just as the trial was concluding (this month) and I couldn't really see the value proposition. ASR is probably OK for those who take the full ASR package and/or don't trust their own judgement. But, then, aren't all tip sheets...

yeah I agree ... anyone's tips i will take with a grain of salt anyway ... important to do your own analysis and make your own call in the end... i just don't have the time to trade full time so is good to have someone else's opinion to consider. i'm trying to find a decent opinion that's all. i agree with you mandrake on the lack of consistency in their analysis .. sometimes it seems as though they pick a stock and then play around with the technical indicators to justify their choice. i readily (more often than not) will not follow their suggestions. i've also found that they make excuses when a trade doesn't go their way .. as if it's the market's fault .. big turn off when you hear attempted explanations and excuses for a bad trade. few other annoyances ... they stopped charting the ASR suggestions' returns when they slipped into a bad run of recommendations .. they also recently pulled together all of their recommendations that are in the drink and placed them into a "speculative" portfolio. i would consider another report next time around. cheers .. Tom

I played with ASR (no derivatives) when I had freebie trial access a few times. Seems to be totally based on pattern analysis, pennants, flags and triangles etc and and in my case I never saw a winning trade unfurl. Mine wasn't a comprehensive test but what I did see didn't enthuse all that much. Tony_M

I met with somebody who worked there and he wasn't impressed with their performance, I thought he may have been a bit disgruntled so I tried to get a trial report from them but was unsuccessful. Tried to log on for trial reports/information from a few others and either didn't receive anything or was just sent sales sheets. The only 'real'trial I obtained was with Share Select and I now subscribe monthly to their CFD service. (Message edited by colin_twiggs on July 28, 2005)

I subscribed to a "special offer" - but will definitely not renew. In my view the individuals writing the reports are quite junior and relatively inexperienced. They are quite Fibonacci oriented. This may be a plus for you. Take a close look at their claimed performance results. Track them for a month or two and I think you will find as I did that the results are less than convincing. On more than one occasion I have observed a claimed buy price that was between the close of the previous day and the open of the day when they claimed that they bought - when the recommendation was specifically to wait "for positive momentum" (ie after the open) before purchasing.
