Went there today. It was a bit disappointing for two reasons. 1. Probably 20 - 30 stalls only 2. .. most of which were flogging blackboxes, books or brokerages. Very few online providers. Estar was there but not Westpac, Comsec, AOT or Sanford. No data providers although Bourse Data and Paritech (Metastock) were there. ... I get the feeling the expo was pitched at beginners. However, I did pick up Technical Analysis from A-Z for $15 from the Paritech stand which is a real bargain. NOrmally retails around $70. Unless you want to attend for this book, save your $15 entry fee (only got another couple of hours to get there though - iti s at the Melb Function Centre adjacent to Rod Laver arena) Neil.

... and, if I may add to my own gripes, there was no hardware there except for Orange Pocketwatch (a handy pager that charts intraday movements and flags price alerts). I had expected that there would be at least one displayer of those multi monitor workstations for day traders - but nope. No hardware. Neil

Neil Your comments regarding the Melbourne Trader’s Expo come as a quite a surprise. Especially as the event had several online brokers including Etrade, Estar, LQuay and TD Waterhouse. And this list doesn’t include the Futures brokers, Man Financial, PG Moloney, Tricom Futures & Equities and Halifax Futures and Securities. Had you managed to visit any of these companies? Regarding software, did you see Market Analyst, Guppytraders – Essentials, MetaStock, OmniTrader, or StockDoctor from Lincoln Indicators? I’d hate to think these companies would be considered black box providers? Other than Boursedata, did you manage to visit Hubb, Just Data or Paritech? Orange does offer a real time data feed to Market Analyst for intraday charts. I’m not sure what gave you the impression the program was targeting beginners, especially with seminar topics covering Advanced Options, Short Selling, Developing Advanced Analytical Systems and Roger Montgomery’s evening session for futures traders. Presenters such as Colin Nicholson, Daryl Guppy, Chris Tate, Louise Bedford, Roger Montgomery, Jim Berg and Dr Harry Stanton offer visitors the widest range of ideas and topics under one roof. If there are other speakers that you believe could offer better value, please let me know. Did you attend any of the seminars? In regards to the entry fee of $15, this includes a subscription package to Shares magazine and Shares weekly worth nearly $50. Surely, this alone is worth the visit. Neil it is our objective, as the organisers of Trader’s Expo, to provide visitors the best information and financial market education available in an exhibition and seminar format. This is achieved with more than 2000 visitors attending the Melbourne Trader’s Expo and the event expanding to three cities. I appreciate your right to speak/write about the event. However, I had to reply, as your comments are not entirely accurate. Any comments on how to improve the show are welcomed. Sincerely Chris Halek Exhibition Manager, Trader’s Expo Phone 03 9813 8200

Thanks Chris You certaintly raised a lot to consider. The first thing that springs to mind is that I cut my subscription to Orange Pocketwatch although that was more to do with me than the product. Good product, but not fantastic and it does produce price errors. As for the seminars, no, I didn't attend any, but feel pretty confident about what they would talk about given my previous knowledge of their subjects from their books. Nothing 'grabbed' me. As for the range of products etc, possibly true that I didn't appreciate the full range but then again it is up to the exhibitor to give us a reason to walk up to them. In terms of short selling, the only information i have so far suggests the ASX makes it too difficult for brokers to offer this on line. My lasting memory will be a presentation one broker was giving ... to people who were trying to understand what and uptrend and a downtrend were ... As for Paritech, yes, I bought the A-Z of Technical Analysis by Mr Metastock from them for just $15. Great pick up. .. and yes, there really is no point in sniping from the sidelines if one does not have constructive comments to make. I admit I have done that. I don't know what the answer is and it is not as though providers would not have known the expo was on. I simply wonder if either our market is too thin or if the rates of successful products is not great. That is speculation - I honestly don't know. The only thing that comes to mind is perhaps to try and get the ASX to provide more information on brokers and taken on a greater presence than they did. Other than that, i'm stuck for an answer. I am still of the view it is more suited to beginners. However I appreciate your efforts and comments. Oh, and yes, you have now explained why Shares magazine appeared on my driveway one morning. It was a total mystery until now !! Cheers Neil

Yo Tonka, I only just read your post. I was at that Expo also. I needed satellite navigation just to find the place!! Had the same feeling about it being aimed at the beginner/ black box buyer etc. Having said that I did inadvertently find a broker that does short selling (annoying that you cannot do this online). Didn't visit seminars for similar reasons as you, also there wasn't anything relevant to me while I was there. Didn't get the Shares mag though, not a great loss.
