Hi Colin I have recieved an email telling me to download a patch purportedly from Microsoft obviously didn't open it however I think my virus scanner has identified it as coming from an email from IC related to TMO more happening or EGL breakout. I am not a computer genius on these things however I thought I would contact you to see if there is anything to it. I could be just plain wrong also. Cheers Steve.

Steve,

The mailing program that sends emails from the forum is incapable of sending attachments.

It is quite easy to send an email and to impersonate a specific sender - which I suspect is the case here.

As a general rule, never open any email attachments, especially those that are supposedly patches for a virus.

I would suggest you look at getting a decent Antivirus package like Norton, which also scans your incoming emails.

Cheers,
Robin

Hello Robin and Forum

Does anyone know anything about AVG anti-virus software from Grisoft?

It's free and I get daily software updates ... no charge, automatically downloaded after a request

It scans my computer for viruses daily

It also alerts me to e-mail viruses and "cleans" or quarantines them

But as with many other things I don't know the first thing about them

A friend recommended them ... and they seem OK

You usually get the quality you pay for but there are bargains around

Is this one?

These messages appear on my outgoing e-mails

---
Incoming mail is certified Virus Free.
Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com).
Version: 6.0.538 / Virus Database: 333 - Release Date: 10/11/03

I am not making a recommendation, other than it seems to have worked for me so far

With Best Wishes

Claudius

I should have said their updates are "daily when necessary, or otherwise as required"

Their last release was on 10/11/03 but I frequently have an alert message saying their updates are waiting to be downloaded when I switch on the computer in the morning.

The updates are speedy.

Claudius

Hi Claudius,

Thanks for bringing Grisoft AVG Anti-Virus to our attention - it seems pretty useful considering that
1. it scans both your incoming emails and your hard disks - both are very important;
2. it provides free virus database updates - always keep your anti-virus software up to date; and
3. it's free for standalone home use - everyone online should have an anti-virus programme.

G'day

I used AVG Grisoft at home for a year as my only anti-virus programme - no problems - functional - reliable. I installed Norton last month, but still have AVG running on the kid's computer.

Stan
