However, I used to run an online forum (500+ motorcycle riders ;-) and I think that Colin's approach is correct. While in the short run it increases his work, in the long run it reduces the grief from idiots and spammers.

It is going to be difficult to get "fresh meat onto the forum" while such a rotten stench seems to be originating from the "old meat."
Now farbeit for me to hazard a guess as to where that stink might be coming from, but it appears that the same two high profile members are taking turns at the front door.
It amazes me that the forum continues to exist, given the greeting so many newbies receive from these certain members. Their first (and subsequently their last) post is often met with hostility, personal attack and insult.
Not only that, the stink has chased away many of those original members whom I regard as more gracious than I.
The forum has evolved from "Incredible Charts" to "Predictable old F@?ts". But hey! I didn't make this stuff up.
Ask yourself how you (and that other old blow-hard with the patch over one eye) would react if you received some of the responses (at your first attempt to engage the forum) that the pair of you dish out to newbies.
The others like me, expect it from you - such is the standard to which IC has sunk.
By your own admission, you are looking for "fresh meat".
You are either getting lonely because all the competition for your ego has withdrawn - in defence of their intellect, or you are bored, and looking for fresh victims to intimidate.
Either way - you are headed for disappointment again - no one wants to play with you anymore. You are fortunate indeed that I dropped by this morning - kind of made your day I gather.

Ingot, You raise a valid point. I have been concerned for some time that the forum merely recycles the same old views instead of welcoming new ideas -- and would welcome suggestions on how to improve the situation.
I would be greatly interested to hear the opinions of others regarding the type of incidents we are commonly seeing above, and in the thread "Daily Profits":
I admit I deliberately baited both Dug and Captain Chaza, to prove a point to the forum, not only for toying with them, but to finally make a stand to clean the rubbish out of the forum for good.
Unlike both of them, I have nothing to lose.
I think I speak for many forum members - when I say that these two members have held this forum to ransome for too long. I do not have disrespect for those who admire their work - but that is not the issue here - their work does not come into the situation in any way - whether there be merit or none.
Many good people - (not just members - PEOPLE) no longer post here. Some of them left in the middle of their paid memberships. I was surprised when I had to look up some of them and saw that they had not even logged in for some months prior to Christmas.
I don't think the responsibility rests solely with yourself - the membership themselves have to accept some responsibility too. The "Report Abuse" button was introduced to stamp out this immaturity, but it has not been used to advantage.
Dug is the class rogue on this forum - indisputably. His recalcitrance is legendary ... and very damaging. Captain Chaza is another adept at the incisive remark and sarcasm. It is high time both these vandals got a swift boot out the back door and into the alley where they can practice their thuggery and forum graffiti where no one cares.
On a modern forum, there is no place for an entrenched personality to continue to harvest victims as they walk in the door. Whether the newbie is a commercial interest seeking business or not - you already have avenues to deal with that. There is no place for scoring Brownie Points by being "street-wise" enough to see through the ploy.
Until a commercial interest was actually displayed either overtly or covertly, there was no basis for any action - only engagement at forum level to see what new ideas the suspect may have had to offer.
I refer to Pistol101 - he may or may not have had a commercial wheelbarrow to push - my own communication with him privately didn't uncover one - but I did indeed learn some interesting things about trading some of the fast-paced markets that interest me.
And this is the beginning of the problem.
Such knowledge was lost to the forum, and the old boys rule again. No one would be interested in contributing because there is never any new idea introduced - whether we agree with such idea or not.
My speciality is trading FX on the daily and weekly charts. I did attempt on a couple of occasions to get a thread going, but drew sarcastic comment privately and drew little interest from the forum.
Granted few are interested in currency trading here - but the IDEAS behind trading Foreign Exchange is VERY applicable to TA and Charting generally. Rather than endure the attitude, I opted to join another forum where such ideas are acceptable and enjoyed.
Why couldn't this have occurred here? Because of the snipers and back-stabbers who love to punish new thought.
Indeed I would like to know the thoughts of others regarding the value to the forum of the ATTITUDES of Dug and Captain Chaza and their ilk. They have to be named, and taken on, to show the absolute cowards they are. Their bullying attempts don't wash with me because I have been around them too long and it's a lay-down-misere that they will rise to the bait.
I am fully ready and expecting personal abuse and private emails from them both. But I can assure you I have already received private emails applauding the speaking up against these forum clowns.
But I am determined that "ordinary members" should have their say on this issue. Unless we become confrontational ourselves to defuse the combative approach of these two thugs, the forum is doomed.
Where are the new members - where is the new thought? Why are respected members leaving or not posting?
Dug and CC do not "own" the forum - but their behaviour says they do.
I would gladly return and begin posting again - as would people like Tony_M, Nightstalker, Rederob, Holycow, Fibonacci, Msparks, Maxboost, Bundy and Snifter, Muzza, Tryhay, Gohard, Thommo78, Peterloh, Hilarius, Smallworld, Lafee, MrLunch, Deanrosario, GreatDane, Spider, Vermante, Stevo, David_Louisson, Histrionix, Visions, Hershy, Buy_Stop, Moleman, Qed, Macca88, and others who may log in but never post.
Now I know some of these people do not post for their own reasons - and some may be still posting - I really do not know.
My point is that if there was something here for them - ie no risk of belittlement and some general respect for others, then I am certain a large percentage of them may still be contributing.
I am not in touch with them all - but I daresay a general survey mail-out to every member who has been active since 2006 would uncover the very reasons I have voiced above.
I know I will draw flak from some for taking this view - but I am prepared to stand up, speak up and wear it if that is the case. The people who did care about this forum, but who are no longer present, will unfortunately not be reading this, so I anticipate my support base will be sadly depleted.
Hopefully there are enough regulars who log in but no longer post, who would be willing to vote some sort of agreement with this position I take.
There are other things on the positive side I could suggest, such as allowing the posting of links to other forums and other sites, provided the member has made a minimum number of posts - eg an arbitrary 30?).
And I suggest a lifting of your condition that other charting packages not be advertised via their logos.
Today's traders know what is out there and available - restricting the posting off opposition charting is unlikely to affect the ability of members to find these other sources. Equally, I seriously doubt it would lead others to seek out these charting packages either.
I still use IC charting - I love it. But I also use other packages. I did not find the other ones on IC - but I did not stop paying my membership because of the other either.
I think liberalising the forum in some respects, but seriously clamping down on the personal attacks and "playing the man" tactics would be a great beginning to bringing "Fresh Meat" to this forum.
Colin - I invite anyone who is reading this, and who agrees with anything I have said, to post as much under this post.
If we pull together on this - right now - right here - and speak up and stand up to these combative and smart-alec thugs, we can indeed give Dug the "Fresh Meat" he asks for.
If the forum as a whole have their say, now that this is open, we can clean it up and build a great meeting place where ideas are welcomed, and learning is honoured.

That would be sufficient to allow normal usage. I'm probably not on anyone's favoured poster lists so if such a system _could_ be introduced I'll say farewell in advance to those whom I've offended.
I am happy to drop the condition regarding logos. It has long outlived its purpose.

And here's an adjunct, if the number of people using the ignore button for any specific user ever exceeds 50% of the number of total users (current within 30 days)then that specific user kets kicked off for three months.

Every time I read it, it reminded me of the only real alternative to putting up with all the madness - and I'm not ready for that yet. I haven't yet bought the gun.
As a previous forum owner who has had to keep 500 bikers in line, I can strongly recommend that a policy of "attack the issue, not the person" be enforced without fear or favour. Vigorous debate on issues is wonderful and stimulating; tirades about other's perceived inadequacies is not.
Interestingly, thoughtful implementation of this policy can actually lead to the forum developing its own culture and being self-moderating, meaning that Colin only needs to intervene on the rare occasion.
My nic actually came from keeping 500 bikers on the straight and narrow. Apparently I was a bit of a mongrel. But when the isolated individual tried to sue me, the faithful many came to my rescue in a way that only bikers can. ;-)
On the other hand, perhaps Colin is happy with the forum the way that it is. After all, it IS his forum and he can run it how he likes!

I believe I was assiduous about keeping on topic and so contributed to the debate. Thus I felt, rightly or wrongly that I was regarded as an outsider. Not however by some who have left.
I, however, do not wish to participate further in THIS "debate". To qualify last comment I must also state that my interest has also diminished because I'm mostly interested in forex now.

I'd like an ignore button with a little number next to it making it clear how many other users currently maintain any particular user in their personal ignore list. There should be penalty applied to transgressors per some arbitrary but applicable limit as I suggested previously. Then everyone with half a brain would monitor himself if he/she wished to continue with posting privilege. I still don't know why Snifter was banned and he's too much of a gentleman to say, as I recall.

Feature request for an ignore button (username post exclude): -Operation --The site maintains a list of "ignored" posters for each username --When a user is logged in any posts from the users "ignored" list are removed from the thread stream. --Users can add posters usernames to the "ignore" list from any post. --Users can remove "ignored" posters usernames from a custom screen.
-Optional --Public stats on count of people ignoring any user.
-Privacy --The ignore lists are confidential to the list owner
-Impact --Would require those who want to use the ignore feature to log in. --As an opt-in system there is no change unless the user sees it as a benefit.
-Benefit --Each user can tailor what they read (who they read) more closely to their own preferences. --Provides a pulse of what (i.e. who) forum members are interested to read, and opposed to what forum members are interested to write. --Filters the wheat from the chaff --Reduces the moderation effort you (Colin) have to put in. --Obviates the need for banning people as any logged in user can achieve the same result. --It offends no one (except maybe those the majority wishes to ignore) --Would be a good example of democracy in action.
I believe that this would lift the appeal of the site for many users, and I commend the originator of the idea as a simple effective and positive contribution beneficial to all.
IGNORE button would be a great idea. Unfortunately we did not develop the forum software and can only pass on the suggestion.
The best we can offer in the short term is the REPORT ABUSE button. If someone's behavior annoys you, let us know. Evil can only succeed if good men do nothing.

Different people get different things from different posts, one person’s jocular anecdotal dissertation delivered with passion and conviction is another’s puerile ignorant egotistical tirade.
Personally I have never been offended by any posts though I may believe some to be inappropriate or OTT for my personal taste.
As trading tends to require higher levels of conviction and a thick skin, it therefore attracts strong personalities, but while some posters take few prisoners the markets take less, so to a certain extent it is the nature of the beast.
Overall, the IGNORE option is exactly that, optional, and would be loved by some and ignored by others, but an interesting statistical window either way.
As for the cost and effort involved, Id guess about a man month if its a company development, it would take about a week to get it up, a week to test and get it useable and 2 weeks to roll out. If it’s a sole developer working for him/her self then 1-2 nights to do 1 night to test and rolled out within 5 days.

On an Ignore Button- As I said before,I've been to a Site that has them and I have No IT skills. So at Warm Pig/d'BarBque [to name it in code],there is a complicated method to post charts,at least much more complicated then here for a "luddite". Therefor I'm wondering that an Ignore Button may take up MegaBytes whatever that may impinge on the Chart Function which would be a Disaster for IC's current excellent format and raison to be.
So can someone who has trawled many sites and seen Ignore Button PLUS Easy Charting please "allay" my fears?
Colin you called for Suggestions and so far the only public one published is the Ignore Button that may prove difficult and some long term feature that joins your notorious list of Things to Do but can't tell when!!
Anyhow how about Promoting the Thread Within Thread Function currently available.It can be confusing to "simpletons" which make up d'Majority of New Members and we do have the past experience of Holy Cow setting up a Labarinth of threads within threads ad nauseum BUT a promotion of the Top of the Page of Topics.The new messages and 1/3/7 day Trees does allow an accessible Portal into this method.
Compare the Promotion of Sub Threads to how it is currently.
Main posting action is in Daily Bread.Dozens of Posts/day are put here of varying Interest.The Daily Bread "crumbs" however maintain several themes over the whole year or more it's operated. However that thread is Continues,rolls out with any past discussion points on it's themes Archived away within a week/10days.I wonder how many new members ever read these Archives?If they don't I wonder what impression they get If/When they first arrive and go -well what's the current NEW News Posts here and they get ????
Colin as I see it IC is 'tricky" for New Posters in that the expectation of ya basic Newbies is to find out what's the opinion around here of a Particular Share that the newbie Holds or has heard about. Incredible Charts doesn't DO that.It doesn't have particular share discussion about a wide membership of the ASX List.Other sites have threads for Every One.Naturally they attract a big proportion of any New Seekers/Pilgrims aka Fresh Meat.
Anyway my suggestion is you TWEAK Up the Top New Messages;1/3/7 day Tree Format.Encourage Thread within Thread even to the extent of coming in and Editing[yeah more work for you,sorry]and please Get Rid of that blessed archaic Star Vote Gizmo or better make who voted Transparent.That'd be Fun!!
