The racing industry in NSW and Queensland has been devastated by equine influenza, and Tabcorp says it has lost $250 million of turnover so far.
Tabcorp boss Elmer Funke Kupper says lost revenue could top $500 million, wiping $30 million off the company's bottom line this financial year. With such grim news dampening spirits in the lead-up to the biggest betting week of the year, Funke Kupper and his team were hoping for a betting windfall.
But Victorian TAB turnover for the first day of the spring carnival, Victoria Derby Day on Saturday, was $45 million — down 3 per cent on last year.
Cup day produced total turnover of $76.7 million in Victoria last year. "We'd be happy just to get somewhere near that this year,"said TAB spokesman Nicholas Tzaferis. But's he's not confident.
