"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

ps: here is a little test to those who can read sci-fi, do charts, listen to music and trade stocks at the same time... 1) name the sisterhood, 2) name the book, 3) name the author

1) The Bene Gesserit

2) Dune

3) Frank Herbert

It's a long time since I read Dune HC, but I used to be an absolute SF nut !

My favourite SF author was/is Robert Sheckley. His short stories had it all, suspense, humour and always a lovely twist at the end.

I recently read this about Frank Herbert....

" Writing metaphorically about the Middle East and oil through a desert planet whose main asset 'spice', was the object of wars around the galaxy, he could be claimed as foreseeing the current world situation."

Chance,

Look like we have a lot in common.

Years ago (meaning when I was a kid) I read a story about the Prophet, Mohammad on how he founded Islam and the warring history in Middle East. There is so much in Dune reminds me of him and his life. Some of the similarities:

1) the melange = oil
2) Muadib = prophet
3) Araki = Arabian desert
4) the freman = arab/muslims
5) even some of the characters reminds me of his many wives and siblings.

If we were to look at what's happening around the world today, his story is quite troubling to say the least.

But regardless, I just LOVE his story telling! I remember I read about his death in some newspaper in description like this... "the world's greatest story teller past away...".

Also a few years back I read about a couple of scientists or/and geologists had actually spent time checking out the planet Araki, weather pattern, etc and concluded that Araki as he had described in his book is ecologically sound and life sustainable. It's quite amazing really.

I will check out Robert Sheckley this weekend. Have not read his work before so I am quite curious and keen.

Cheers... and have a good evening! :-)

ps: Have you heard/read AMTRAK WAR before? It's another of my favourite, quite humourous and funny, worth a read.

Hadn't heard of Amtrak Wars before HC, but am going to visit the NZ rellies in a few weeks, so will probably catch up on some reading then.

The only book I've read called The Prophet was by Kahlil Gibran, it was given to me by a girlfriend in '79 and has her pic in the front clutching a rubber tree and pointing at the sap in the cut. I expect she became a schoolteacher......

Gotta go check out some airline sites for the best deals, keep up those posts, the back pages will become the front pages soon !

Have a nice everything
