I couldn't find the right place for these links, those of you who think you understand what it is all about, well, see if these are for real or just some lunatics talking. It's your choice and your decision to believe or not to believe. Read all these with an open mind because many of the people who maintain these sites are themselves have become as radical and extreme as the terrorists.

In anycase, these don't represent my view. You read them to acquire an understanding rightly or wrongly. The essence is to strike a rational, balanced view of what is going on.

And remember this word: CHOICE, something many people in the Western world has been taking for granted and yet fail to appreciate the significance of it.

Hi HC

That Transparency International's Corruption Perception Index Report is a very interesting read. They very firmly point a finger at the potential corruption of the oil companies and governments.

I suppose the reason that Australia fared less well than NZ, on the chart, was because we have much more business activity here. Overall we should be very pleased at how well we are perceived as being honest and ethical.

NZ got a rating of 9.4 - 9.6
Australia got a rating of 8.4 - 9.1
Not too bad a difference......do NZ have many oil interests?!!

Cheers
Ann

Ann,

Good to hear from you again. I reckon some/most Australian firms that have overseas interest in some way have been "tainted" by bad/corrupt business practices or they won't be able to survive at all.

Palm greasing or bribery is a way of life/business in many third world countries. So my generalised opinion is any Aussie miners that have operation/interest in these countries, their modus operandi in obtaining mining permits, local cooperation, etc are achieved through both handshakes and under-table money. (Note I am not saying this is done out of choice, it's just the way things are - no pay no deal.)

Since Australia has a lot more companies operating in these countries than NZ, naturally, the score is much lower.

Cheers.

Ahem, I think $140K does not reflect the "generosity" of the people here... now you get to walk the talk - show me your money!

Australians donate $140,000 to Niger
August 2, 2005 - 4:04PM

Australians donated $140,000 in the first week of an appeal to help with famine relief in Niger, the Australian Red Cross says.

The money would be spent on food, seed, fodder distributions and mobile feeding centres in Niger and neighbouring countries Mali, Burkina Faso and Mauritania, which were also facing food shortages, a Red Cross spokesman said.

The food crisis in Niger, one of the world's poorest countries, has affected 3.6 million people, the United Nations says.

Donations can be made by calling 1800 811 700 or online at www.redcross.org.au.

Ok, CRUNCH TIME! The moment of truth is very near, let's hear from those who cry for the enemies...

Tape Released: American al Qaeda Member Warns of Attacks
Names Los Angeles and Melbourne as Next Targets

By BRIAN ROSS

Sep. 11, 2005 - In an apparent Sept. 11 communiqué broadcast on ABC News, an al Qaeda operative threatens new attacks against cities in the U.S. and Australia.

"Yesterday, London and Madrid. Tomorrow, Los Angeles and Melbourne, Allah willing. And this time, don't count on us demonstrating restraint or compassion," the tape warns. "We are Muslims. We love peace, but peace on our terms, peace as laid down by Islam, not the so-called peace of occupiers and dictators."...

*** with Commonwealth Games on schedule next year... this gonna be a shuddering thought for a few people.

According to an expert in terrorism on the news this morning, the tape was an "opportunistic stunt" by a "low placed operative who lacks credibility".

I would be much more worried about an outbreak of bird flu, see the link below.
