HC Do you think the removal/reduction of trade tariffs on sugar will affect CSR to a great degree? If so, it might be a good long term play. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4118448.stm

Kate, Some recent news/report from my notebook. I think sugar is a little tricky business - not too long ago I came across a news report saying the EU used (or plan) some kind of loophole to bypass this so they can dump close to 10 million tons of sugar they have in their warehouse. I don't have that article but I think I am quite sure I'd read something like this. What I am saying is the EU farmers are powerful lobby groups, I don't think they will just lie down and die. So keep watching. Chartwise I think CSR is looking quite good. Frankly it's in my watch list but I reckon now is not the time to buy the stock. Cheers. CSR sweetens profit forecast after land sales Back Date 7/10/2005 Author Teresa Ooi Source The Australian -- Page: 28 Property sales are expected to bolster the 2005-06 profits of Australian-listed CSR. The diversified industrial group now anticipates a full-year profit of $A220.8m, which is 10 per cent higher than previous forecasts. Its property division's operating profit is expected to rise to $A50m, up from $A28.6m previously, after the sale of several industrial sites in the western Sydney suburb of Erskine Park. CSR owns about 100 hectares of industrial land in Erskine Park, and has sold 17 hectares to BlueScope Steel and 3.7 hectares to two undisclosed buyers. CSR ups forecast for property division October 6, 2005 - 5:19PM CSR Ltd has upgraded its 2005/06 earnings forecast for its property division after reaching agreements on a number of property transactions. These included the further sale and lease of industrial land at its 100 hectare site in western Sydney. CSR said the first sale of 17 hectares of land at Erskine Park, to BlueScope Steel Ltd, was announced in July 2004. It is in now the final stages of site preparation and road construction with the proceeds of this transaction expected to be realised by March 2006. CSR said its full year operating result for the property division is now expected to be at least $50 million. This total includes funds from the August sale of its garden products joint venture, Envirogreen Pty Ltd. CSR also said two other parties had agreed to acquire a total of 3.7 hectares for $9.6 million. The sales are conditional on obtaining registration for subdivision of the land and development approvals, which are expected by March 2006. CSR has also entered a long term lease of 2.9 hectares at Erskine Park. The asset is forecast to have an end value of $15.8 million producing an initial yield of 7.75 per cent. CSR managing director Alec Brennan said CSR accelerated the development of the Erskine Park site to meet the rapidly growing demand for industrial land in western Sydney. "We can deliver fully serviced lots on flexible terms which are attractive to a variety of parties seeking to buy or lease land in the area," Mr Brennan said. The announcement was made after the market closed. CSR shares ended down 19 cents at $2.90 in a broader weaker market. Higher sugar prices likely to sweeten CSR's earnings Back Date 14/7/2005 Author Teresa Ooi Source The Australian -- Page: 24 Australian sugar and building materials company, CSR, could raise its forecast of profit for 2005-06. Some analysts feel that a rise in world sugar prices could lead the company to lift its profit forecast at its annual general meeting on 13 July 2005. The company has previously predicted a profit broadly in line with the profit of $A287 million for the year to 31 March 2004. It could increase its forecast of EBIT by up to five per cent. However, about one third of its business is building materials, a sector that has been affected by the slower housing market.

I definitely wasn't planning to buy CSR or anything at the minute! Just looking at the opportunities. Need to research whether they are exposed to the US building market (maybe that is just RIN). Didn't even know that 1/3 of the business is in aluminium - prices a bit depressed but better than being at the top, less chance of it going down. The chart came up on a recent scan which is what brought it to my attention. The other thing I remember is that they were going to expand the ethanol part of the business which, unlike biodiesel, will be supported by the govt. Kate

Kate, Thanks for the read... I think I am a fan of the writer - coz he uses "beautiful" and "colourful" language in his writing - hard to find in these days where everyone is trying to be politically correct. Just sweet! Cheers.

Its desperately trying to go up but each time it does its sold off. I have a buy around 2.70, don't know whether it will go as low as that but with all the bad news about at the moment I'm not buying anything. Kate

Actually now I come to think of it Peterloh said that the fund managers are expecting huge amounts of super coming their way around or after 14th October. PE ratio pretty good, sugar tariffs likely to be reduced/lifted , they have their own sugar powered electricity supplied(must reduce costs) diverse range of businesses, it looks like a genuinely good business, maybe it is and someone has recognised that. And apart from all that, it has a nice chart which is the most important thing!!
