G'day eblode

I'll pick up my copy of the Melbourne Herald Sun tomorrow morning. Thanks for the update as a post.

I beginning to wonder why there is not more interest in this thread. Here we have a guy (Darryl Morley) who publishes all his results (which are impressive, in my opinion) and we don't have a single post other than yours on the thread. Not a single query or comment!
Does the forum need a defibrillator?

Could it be that most people have no need of this style of trading and the commensurate returns? Have they all sold in May and .........
Are most people doing better than this guy?
Or are we all beavering away privately at our desks trying to work out his methodology?

Perhaps the threads location under General is the problem.
I think it would be better placed under Trading Systems or Stocks ASX - Short Term: (strictly TA).
What do you think?
With your agreement perhaps Colin could move it to another area?
Regardless, I'll try to put up a post tomorrow.

Thanks for starting it. Hope we see more participation soon.

I'd certainly be more interested in the 'Day Trader' if I could read the column on Wednesday mornings - but alas, not even i/net access.
Darryl has a web site :
http://thedaytrader.com.au/Day%20Trader%20Home.html
but there's nothing on it.

888,
For years I have wondered the same thing. The guy gives the mug in the street the greatest format to follow and hardly anyone on this thread is that interested. Suits me.
I'm making profits with some of his buys. This year alone I bought AGM,ESG,RMS and I'm laughing. But for the mug who knows nothing about the market he could of cleaned up just following DAYTRADER and doing nothing else. The guy has doubled his money in 9 months. Anyone out there that has done better??

G'day zorba and eblode

Yep zorba. Checked out the website soon after eblode mentioned Darryl.
Darry publishes on Wednesday of each week in the Herald Sun but the info in his column is only current to the previous Friday. That can't be a lag between submission of copy and printing so I suspect the lag is to get around the laws relating to handing out financial advice.

Common to Darryl's holdings I currently maintain holdings in AGM, SDL as well as a positions in ROY and VRE still. While ever these are not the best returns I maintain in either $ or % terms, they are considerable. These positions or holdings were not entered because of or necessarily after Darryl mentioned them.

His stockpicking interests me but his management of risk and exits are what I would like to investigate further as time permits.
Ive set up a project and watchlist named DAYTRADER and am recording his positions, entries, targets and exits for further investigation.

Over the years of the forum that I have been involved there have been many requests from contributors about how much money can you make from trading.
We're often regaled with the idea that buy, hold (and pray) is the best methodology.
Now I would never ask anyone their personal business but the proof is being published every week, for those interested, of the returns possible from trading.

I suspect we will be deafened by the silence of the replies to you last question, eblode.

Will try to post tomorrow again.
We're having Pees for dinner.
Pasta, pesto, pinenuts, proscuitto and parmigiano.
Something quick before the footy starts.

Eblode, and macca888, just to prove you wrong -

I've doubled (108%) since the low in September, on each of 2 completely different systems and portfolios, short term and medium term.

G'day ken

Nope. You haven't proved me wrong but you have provided another confirmation of the possible returns from astute trading.

I know you "work" at it ken by the lack of your posts in more recent times. I'm just happy to hear of what I see as another successful trader.

All the best

I get the herald sun everyday but I must confess that I dont read Daryl's article. It wasnt that I have any specific reason not to. But boiling down to it, I'm just not as enthused as some others. I remember back in 94, I met a guy who religiously followed his articles and would often talked about them when we met, so for about 3 months back in 94, I did make an attempt to follow his articles. What I found was that while he put up in buys and sells every week. He didn't always explain his decisions. Sometimes he would talk about his reasons, often he didnt. But if you had read it long enough, you kind of worked it out for yourself his sell criteria, but his buy criteria was a totally different story. I dont know if things has changed now. But that was how it was for me back then.
I guess when it comes down to it. I am more interested in my own system, my own rules than his. And I have no interest in tips. My return is comparable to his, but that is probably because of a raging bull market, I have no illusion there.
But honestly, How much is enough?

Hi eblode,

Thank you for the reference to this thread. I try to keep up with the posts on this site & I respond when time permits.

DAYTRADER seems an excellent source for potential successful trades (watchlist), but only if they fit my trading rules. Otherwise I loose control and understanding of my trading actions.

A review of daytrader's current portfolio shows I would have been proud to hold all of his picks, but YGL & ROY look like bail outs (if he is not already out)!

Mark

Interestly enough last week Daytrader sold VRE at .40 and today it finished at .48 which proves he's only human.

Hi fellas,
DAYTRADER during the week does give the dates in the paper but I don't print them as they are really irrelevant. The point is that those trades take place during the week, sometimes he omits the price paid until the following week, which I do print so you can follow his trail and prices. What amazes me is that he mentions in this weeks column "All my trading decisions are made outside market hours. I have disciplined myself not to look at the market during the day except for placing orders at the market open. This sometimes means potential profit is given up. However, it causes me much less stress than watching market fluctuations during the day and trying to make trading decisions on the fly". Now that really surprised me. I have to watch the market at least a couple of times a day wherever I am and this guy never does. Wow!

Hi , I attended one of his seminars and he does his scan on the weekend and usually buys on Mondays or Tuesday.
Uses no indicators, just a ruler, support and resistance lines
I have been tracking his buy and sells since 22/1/07 and he seems to have losses of around $400 and big profits of $2000- $6000. He just keeps on buying and selling, keeps on keeping on. Wish I could do that psychologically. Around February he had 4 or 5 losses in a row.
He is a very nice chappy, he was a broker for many years before he retired to his boat

Another chappy who runs a portfolio is David Haselhurst from the Bulletin.
His web site is http://bulletin.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=271241
He does some fundamental analysis though.
I heard the Bulletin may be shut down soon as it does not make a profit and new owners can't have that !!!!

Hi Eugenio,
Thanks for the post once again.....
looking at daytraders profit of $3,714 on $138,840 invested
does this mean a 2.6% profit,is this right?
Could one of the more experienced traders confirm this.

DAYTRADER'S play on the market is interesting. I believe this is the way it works. He must have a filter system such as StockDoctor and each weekend he gets the shares that have gone north by leaps. He buys them with tight stops. The ones that fall down he immediately sells, perhaps 3 out of 4 BUT every once in awhile he hits gold and that share soars and he keeps it, always with a tight stop. On the losers he more than makes up for on the winners PROVIDING he dumps the losers quickly. It takes guts to buy the dogs he does but it pays off as you can see with a 100% gain within a year on his capital.

Hello Eugenio,
When the daytrader was talking about calculating the amount of shares to buy by the difference between the stop and the buy price, it is explained on IC home page under
Trading Guide....Money Management the 2 % Rule..........
if you can make head from tail out of it !!!

Lylo,
Thanks. I sent a email to Darryl and asked him to qualify it by example. Hopefully he will reply. Otherwise I will go by the 2% rule that always applies in my trading. And now to bed.

shares to buy =
(total capital * percentage drawdown per trade) /
(1 - stop loss price / buy price) /
buy price

20000 shares = ($100,000 * 2%) / (1 - $1.00 / $1.10) / $1.10

He mentions to calculate the number of shares to buy, divide the amount you are prepared to risk by the difference between the stop and the buying price.

This is a fairly clear statement.

If you were buying for example RIO at $100 per share.
Your prepared to risk say $1000 dollars.
Your stop loss is $80 per share.

So you lose, if stopped out, $20 dollars per share.

The amount of shares to buy so you only risk $1,000 dollars is then 1000/20 = 50 shares.

If you risk less or more the quantity changes, if your stop loss is greater or smaller the quantity changes.

Your loss and exit is established before you even buy the stock, and you buy the amount of stock to allow for the worst case loss, you are prepared to make on the trade or investment.

Hi All
As I am a daytrader (not in this guy's league though) does anyone have a more concise detail on his entry criteria? or methodology. Yes, I sometimes buy after giant leaps, although if you are not quick as a hawk, you can get totally screwed as everyone sells off in a panic,,does he buy 'on the dips', on support? I am quite interested as this is affects me on a daily basis..
I welcome any daytrading tips or ideas from all!! Learn from each other!!
Cheers...

Strataminor,
His method is not that complicated. Every week he filters the top moving stocks on his Stockdoctor or similar filter software. He picks maybe 3 or 4 shares, buys them and keeps very tight stops. The ones that drop down a few cents he sells IMMEDIATELY! What's left goes up and every once in a awhile he catches a real star that goes UP. He follows his winners with tight stops all the way. That's how it's done. Just be sure when they go south to be there to unload them. He has doubled his money in 8 months.
Be back in two weeks.
Eugenio

Hi Eblode
Thanks for making the effort of getting back to me. Just to clarify, when you say 'top moving stocks', you mean in price movements? or do you mean volume? or both? And does he get in these top moving stocks a day, or a few days after their big moves? Sorry to bug you again, but I am a full time day / swing trader so I am very interested in anything that can help me survive!!
Thanks for helping out Eugenio!

from Andrew H.

What day did he buy my CXM???

Is this guy for real ???
OR
a Damn Liar?
OR
Cooking the books with the aid of Hindsight?

You can tell him
"This Captain wasn't born Yesterday!"

Salute and Gods' speed

What I am saying is
There was no TA reason to buy until the day I did
She gapped up on the open and 0.60 would be more credible
0.53c is Incredulous!!

You are making the assumption that every person uses TA and that every person using TA uses breakouts to buy.

This is clearly not the case.

CC

I think what happens with these type of guys is their predictions sometimes become self fulfilling.

They publish their selections in a popular newspaper with thousands of readers. A proportion of readers buy the stock on his recommendations.

Then you get the flow on effect traders see this stock take off, so they buy etc. etc

Then its time for the selector to sell at nice profit.
