Here is an interesting oil fact from Energy and Capital
I often wondered how big a barrel was

Right now, with oil trading for $95 a barrel, we’re paying the equivalent of 15 cents a cup. There’s 667 cups in every barrel of oil. So $95 divided by 667 = $0.15.

Good one Mum ... is that with or without GST?

I guess I would still prefer the flat white in a cup.

What about this one ...

You have a barrel of oil, and you need to measure out just one gallon. How do you do this if you only have a three-gallon container and a five-gallon container?

Answer here.

Don't waste all day on that site!

And while we are at it ...

The word "barrel" only has one "b," so why is the abbreviation for a barrel of petroleum "bbl?"

To put you out of your misery ... go check it out for yourself.

Finally (before I get kicked off the thread...

Can anyone tell me why (when oil was nudging $65/bbl about 18 months ago) the whole world went crazy over bio-fuel stocks ... (and little me-too trashy bio-this-'n'-that-stocks were the fruit of the week) but today, when it is nudging $100/bbl not one bio-fuel stock is mentioned on IC threads?

Where are the shepherds when you need 'em?

The sheep are milling around looking for a direction to jump!

And no, it was not another riddle!

My point is this: The topic of the moment is not determined by necessity, but by the media. Dear Reader, you must recall how we were all compiling lists of all the bio-stocks in sight ... and anything that even looked like it would grow an acre of corn was suddenly worth 10-fold it's former doldrums!

Now that the local elections are pre-occupying the Australian and US Press, there is no room for bio-fuel on the front pages - that little gem-of-a-story is being saved for after Howard gets re-elected, and Kev 007 re-groups the troupes!

Well, we have to have something a-fire in the public imagination, don't we?

Sheep ... every one!

The AU$ change allowed the AU$ pump price to remain steady while the US$ barrel price increased.

On the other hand Caltex got scared by the government last year and stopped price gouging. The funny thing is there was no proof gouging was happening because the gouged pump price was in relative terms mimicking the barrel price. Caltex always said: "We just pass on the Singapore price to our customers." Apparently economies of scale don't apply in their business.

Once Caltex stopped implementing the mimic behaviour and the two prices diverged it was actual proof that they had gouged pump customers (prior to this). Once the pump price was reduced the government and people were so elated at the cheaper price they totally ignored the fact that they now had proof there had been gouging all along.

When the government had no proof of gouging they were active. When they had been given proof of gouging by Caltex itself the government became inactive. They could have taken Caltex to the cleaners. I thought exposing their price practices so openly was the stupidest thing Caltex ever did. They ran the risk of getting sued for market manipulation and took a cut in all future profits at the same time because they are now operating on lower margins.

Off topic I know but I found this article rather disturbing.

Lafee - thanks for that - yes ... quite communist and over-regulated.

But worse ... stifling for any innovative and problem-solving approach by others. If you come up with ANY idea from which the government either cannot profit from, or if your idea could eventually reduce revenue to government ... you get squashed and punished.

Derr!

I heard stories about inventions in the past that were either bought up by bigger corporations (Dunlop Rubber, Fuel Companies and so on) to exclude competition and efficiency. Can't find the links right now - would have to go searching with me mate John Google again for it I s'pose.

Sorry Mum if I have hi-jacked your bright little thread.

In penance I offer this happy little story - once the link opens and you have read the story ... click on the short U-Tube movie.

Under the movie browser there are other similar inventions-movies of brilliant concept.

Feel heartened that someone is still trying to do good.

And while I am in the innovative-items mood ...

A different motor story

A novel efficient engine

And before you get bored, a new thermo-electric chip with think-for-yourself applications.

With best wishes

Anyone read about the Abiotic Oil theory.
Here is a couple of links

http://www.energybulletin.net/2423.html

http://freeenergynews.com/Directory/Theory/SustainableOil/

I have always found the theory that all the oil came from rotted down fossils hard to believe. I mean there is so much of it but i'm not going to make a stand on it cos i don't know. Its just interesting that there are other theories

In the interests of variety, Mum, I offer this interesting story.

At first I thought it was a story of aggression and war.

But as I got into this story, I understood what I am reading is one of the remarkable stories of the 20th century.

Not only does it shift the balance towards more favourable perception of our Arab neighbours in the Middle East, but it shows a humanity, a respect for women, and a lifestyle dream identifying exactly with that of most citizens of this planet.

The key character in this true story had a profound insight far beyond that which any modern politician could claim in the west, save perhaps Nelson Mandela and those of his calibre.

Truly a touching story, and an inspiration.

A little long, but I guarantee if you give it a moment, you will complete it, changed forever.

Try to imagine the man's character from his story, and these pics.
