Good Afternoon

The saddest part of the capitalist system is that those who can least afford it are often forced into distress selling of homes or stocks or both

That is when the grave robber buyers gather to buy bargains brought about by the misfortunes of others

It can be argued that without the grave robbers (sometimes known as speculators and bargain hunters) there would be even less liquidity in distressed markets

What is the moral standing of the buyer?

As a Christian I would argue that all human conflict (whether active or passive) is a compromise brought about by human imperfection. One day we may have a perfect world but that is a long term hope.

In the meantime it would be best to support those who must sell by buying at a fair price given the presence of many in the market at one time with a variety of motives

I would like to suggest that the following stocks are worth placing on a watchlist for support when the time is right

I would be interested in the views of readers on the technical and fundamental issues with stocks on the list, either in possibly retracing less than the market, or rising faster than the average when recovery time comes (whether sooner or later)

I do not assert that any particular direction or level of under or over performance will be the case, only that I am interested in the views of the Forum

If any have potential value over the average it would be interesting to watch for a favourable entry time, even if some of us may currently be exiting, or may have exited already

Can you clearly define what characteristics constitute a grave robber stock?

OHK

Any stock can be a grave robber stock if it is subjected to distress selling

This could be a function of the amount of leverage used to buy popular trading stocks on which large margin calls are occurring

It could be far wider including most blue chips in a downwards spiralling bear market driven by fear

It would depend in lesser corrections on the amount of distress selling

No stock is immune from distress selling, depending on circumstances

Most large institutions are grave robbers by nature ... as many have the cash reserves and cash flows to profit from the misfortunes of others

If an institution is distressed then their stock sales add to the grave robber list

Any stock can be a graver robber stock if sufficiently oversold

The question of what is a "sufficiently oversold" situation is a complex function of economic fundamentals and negative sentiment

These can change more rapidly than many people assume, especially when fear reaches extremes

My fear is that America is over extended in a two front war and is being absorbed into enemy territory on the enemy's terms ... as happened to Napoleon in the snows of Moscow and in the long disastrous retreat which followed

If Afghanistan and its porous borders had been resolved before a second front was started all might have been well, especially if the poverty of that nation could have been changed to prosperity

Opening a second front in Iraq required far more resources than were contemplated ... just like the Germans opening up a second front in the East before securing what seemed their certain victory in the West in WW2

Add to that the undisciplined liquidity and credit availability to get America out of one recession, and the seeds of the next were well and truly sown

It may take years for these events to unwind, but unwind they will unless outstanding leadership of a kind not yet seen steps forward in America's greatest hour of need

You triggered a political response because ultimately that is the response that a major recession would require

Shorter term grave robbing will happen in any correction if the value offered by the robber is at damaged price levels. In that case you could argue that the "robber" is providing a valuable service, by putting a brake on the price drop, but that does not completely negate the suffering endured by sellers. It just makes their suffering less than might otherwise be the case if the "robbers" were not in business.

With Best Wishes

Hilarius

PS It should not be forgotten that even in some distress selling situations the seller may end up being the winner if the robbers under estimate the extent of further price declines. The seller with cash then has the upper hand.
