Smallworld The graph line depicts the median weekly value of the portfolio of stocks assuming an equal value had been invested in each stock last November (when the data gathering of prices was started) All your selections will be charted as a single line as soon as the humble chicken and rice being served this evening at the Friary has been consumed As some visitors have been invited to share this simple meal there may be an accompaniment of red wine which could delay publication of your chart until after Choral Evensong tomorrow Stay Tuned Fr Hilarius PS With your permission the last six months trend of EACH stock can be charted along with the portfolio total. Actual values will be either side of the published median, as these are only of interest to short term speculators If you declare yourself to be a short termer we will (a) pray for you and (b) chart your actuals as well as your medians There are no lengths to which we will not go for so distinguished a Candidate Friar as yourself (Subject only to the effects of this evening's wine tasting, which we undertake as a matter of duty)

mrlunch, Fantastic results today. I am greatly impressed, because there are so many stocks that go up and down that the success of your selection cannot be due to accident, and must derive from your exceptional skills - and your proven method - a a trader. Congrats!

Thanks for the kind words Ody... now the trick is to make those results real! In reality I wouldn't actually trade like that, which highlights the effect real money has on the process.

Dear Friar, Now that I know what these lines are I am hesitant to put you through all this trouble. I am going to swing it short term with your money and will be changing stocks as frequently as you go to church. May be it would be better if you (a) pray for me and (b) chart whats the easiest for you. I'm likely to have 7 - 10 stocks in the mix at any one time, I may buy a few more tomorrow to spend all my allowance. By all means, have a great evening with friends, and dont bother to chart anything until I have bought my full quota. PS. I'm very partial to a fine red myself until my doctor told me to concentrate on survival rather than enjoyment. Cheers SW (Message edited by smallworld on June 14, 2007)

The last point on each trendline consists of Week 32 which is the week ended today, Friday 15th June 2007 The stocks in each portfolio were selected very recently and no suggestion is intended that all stocks have been held for 32 weeks Some individual stocks in these portfolios may have been held for a significant number of days, weeks, months or years, some may be held currently, some may not be held currently, and some may never have been held The intention is to test the selected stocks (or others which may replace them, and/or notional cash balances) over the period from now until Christmas 2007 Participants should maintain their own records and the notional balances achieved are recorded by each member on an honour system. Notional brokerage should be calculated on purchases and sales within a limit of 100,000 notional dollars per stock entered now or in the future. Conscientious participants will also track dividends, capital returns, new issues etc. New issues would need to be funded from within the available starting cash of 1,000,000 notional dollars and subsequent realised profits Rights issues will constitute an exception to the rule that each new entry is to begin at 100,000 notional dollars Hilarius

Just thought I would re-post my stocks under this new thread so they don't get lost in 'our daily bread'. If I have to allocate money to them then I'll allocate $100k to each stock. SDL, CMO, CVN, NAV, DRT, MPO, SLX, PNA, AGS, RML

Hi Hilarius, I have spent most of the cash on roughly the same amount on each of the following stocks: ASX, BHP, DJS, IMD, MND, JBH, MRM, REF, RIO, HVN. According to the attached spreadsheet I have spent $999,349.17 and have $650.84 left in cash. Please let me know if this is what you want or something else.

Dear Hilarius, I see myself as having invested exactly equal amounts, as per the closing price yesterday, in the ten stocks I had already chosen (you kindly substituted, at my request, MMS for the earlier MCR, as I am not comfortable enough about nickel per se): CAB, CCP, IPL, JBH, LEI, MLB, MMS, MRM, SMX, STS. I put these on a watch list last night, and will compare the prices at the date of termination (I printed out the watch list at once, so that I know definitely what my starting figures were at the end of 15 June). Should a dividend or any such goody be announced, I shall attempt to take it into account, but for me the main value of the exercise is to find out just how the share prices will move, per se, without any interference on my part. That is, I am trying to answer the following questions: 1. How will I fare, in terms of share prices, with a "portfolio" chosen very largely on the basis of its prospective earnings, though not ignoring the PEG and financial health at the start, as well as the company's history and sphere of activity? 2. What happens to these stocks if I adopt a "hands-off" approach from start to finish? I have never done either (1) or (2) in isolation from other moves, and that is what makes the exercise interesting to me.

Hilarius Just out of curiosity are the figures at the base of your graph weeks? Looks like Mr Lunch may catch mine soon if his rate of climb continues. Will be interesting to see how it goes once the comp gets under way.

Hilarius By limiting position size to a fixed amount - you are inhibiting the very essence of trading . That is the Psychology of money management. I would prefer a discretionary use of money management in multiples of $100,000. If Fair Friar sees fit to change the rules I would like to have $1,000,000 on PDN Cheers vermante

vermante As I understand it the original idea for this competition was to pick 10 stocks and see how they are performing at Christmas. That's why I chose 10 stocks and most of the other combatants did too. I think now that the competition has got underway we should not start changing the rules all the time or it will become too confusing. If you want to pick just one stock why not enter the weekly comp.
