Good question.
i have been guilty of this of late and I promise to fix it soon.
I know that some people don't feel that sectors have the clout they used to, but I feel that there is great value in analysis of sectors, particular those that are threatening to emerge.

We have some excellent analytical minds on this forum, here's your chance to get stuck in, and save spider from having to do any work, it cuts into my driving (and drinking, but not in that order or in combination!)

myklan springs to mind, as does macca, and a heap of others (this is starting to sound like a acceptance speech, I know that I am going to get heaps from anyone I leave out............... I'd like to thank my mum and dad for having me...................)

spider.

G'day

just thought i'd put some pictures up with a separate thread for each sector to get the ball rolling.

I've never considered sector analysis as a valuable tool - so looking forward to another lesson.

The charts have the XAO overlayed as well as the 30 week EMA.

Also included Twiggs Money Flow, cause I like it and miss Colin's Diary.

...turn to the next twelve threads to put your bit in, comments, other indicators, support & resistance, stages, strategies, general knowledge, etc, etc, etc.

thanks,
Stan

I'm glad to see some discussion over sector index starting here. Not only because I think sector analysis is good for stock selection, but also I regularly trade sector index CFDs.

Will participate tomorrow, I think.

Cheers,

Shaguar.

The reason for my interest in sector analysis is I believe it is a useful way in identifying groups of winning stocks. A great example of this has been the property sector, more recently nickel/gold/resource stocks, and now we are seeing the finance sector tick up.

When looking at indicies, it is worth considering the number of available ASX indicies, the discrepencies between small and large market cap stocks and the size of the overall ASX. These factors can distort this type of analysis.

We have 12 main ASX sectors and within each sector, huge differences between market caps. A big move up by Telstra doesn't mean the telco sector is booming - it may mean the very opposite. Same with the banks in the finance sector.

Should we assess the 12 sectors or can we break them down into smaller categories? Does the ASX have enough stocks to make micro-sector analysis worthwhile?

If we consider the three observations below, can we identify more winning trades and ride the volatility of the markets?

1) Strong correlation between stocks in strong trending sectors (ie the majority of stocks in the same sector move in the same direction)

2) Easier to pick winners in a winning sector (more bulls)

3) Several stocks/sector experience cyclical and seasonal behaviour

4) Movements between value, growth and defensive stocks/sectors

Will post some further details at a later date.

What me worried?

Just asking myself how much grunt the all ords has left to break this resistance.

New2,

Sector analysis would really become interesting if the various groups making up each sector could be examined separately from the sector itself. For instance the Media group within the Consumer Discretionary sector have taken a hiding lately and this group is probably responsible for weaker sector performance. Examining the sector alone hides the performance of the group.

I have looked each which way for group indices but can't find them? Do they exist anywhere?

Hi Forum,

Just to highlight another little problem with sector analysis.

AMC and BHP are both components of Materials. If I had to define the difference between chalk and cheese I'd just point my finger at these two. For mine, AMC is probably a good bellwether (correct spelling-a lead sheep with a bell on it; very appropriate under the circumstances)of the world consumer market since it has a hand in much of the packaging. BHP produces stuff in such quantities that the plastic bag debate just doesn't get a ticket.

So, what does the sector chart tell us?

I'm still looking for dissected component charts but can't find.

Could IC break new ground here????

Good to see this part of the forum remains so active. *sarcasm*

Has anyone given some thought to the affect of the potential tax cuts? There has been talk of the government cutting taxes which as a result will boost consumer spending.

Although nothing has been confirmed, should we be keeping an eye on certain consumer sectors?
