Gidget Checking the sectors once a week should be sufficient. Go to Sector Analysis to find out more. Colin

A Warning to all users who use Sector charts: The ASX has ceased to distribute data for the 24 Sector Indices (XAT, XBF, XGO, XMI, etc.) since Friday 5th April. They will still supply the daily close until July 5th - but no daily high or low. After July 5th S&P will cease to calculate these indexes entirely. The ASX will only supply data on 10 major industry groups - of little use to most investors. A separate signal will be available from S&P with (you guessed it) 23 NEW sector classifications. We still have to resolve when this will be available and - the object of the whole exercise - at what price. Colin

Colin, I'm probably displaying my ignorance here, but couldn't one (eg. you :-) caculate the sector indices onself? I guess one needs the market capitalisation of each stock, which I presume is not as easy to get as the OCHL data? What a great idea it was to privatise the ASX, eh?! m.

Matt The ASX seems unaware that, in the long run, this will harm them. There will be less direct equity investment if investors do not have access to pertinent information. Colin

Col, should we perhaps look to exit all equities, since this sector re-rating may create an exodus? ++++++

Colin, I also apologise for my ignorance. But I agree with Matt and think that you have a great opportunity to provide data on sectors/groups. Otherwise I (and I guess other people) will try to do it ourself by some means. On another topic .. . I don’t quite understand: if there is data on sectors/groups, than why there is no data on subgroups 101, 102, 061, 62, etc. It would narrow down the search for companies in uptrend/downtrend sectors and SUBGROUPS. Therefore, Colin, I will ask the question again: is it possible to implement the calculation of the sector and subgroups indices in IC ? Thanks

Blackdog We have to use 150-day (or 200-day) exponential moving average as an approximation of the 30-week weighted MA. Combine this with a 10-day MA (bull signal) and you have a pretty useful stock screen. Add a 1.5 Volume Spike if you want volume confirmation. I would then check Chaikin MF and MACD for further confirmation. Colin

I have noticed XHB has made a 50% retracement of it's bull run that started in 1998. It looks as if it is about to turn around. Is this the start of Wave 5? (E.Wave)

Colin Could you please give an update on the new S&P/ASX indices for the sector analysis system in IC. I feel a bit lost at the moment to know what sector I should be keeping an eye on. Trying to work through the stocks to put into sectors on the Maket Analyst progam I have. Any info greatly appreciated. Rgds

Hello Mottley, If you go to http://www.asx.com.au/statistics/l3/GICS_IndexDescription_MS3.shtm, you'll find a full sector by sector description of the new sectors. You can then download (via hyperlinks on that page), a listing (in Excel) of all of the stocks that make up each of these sectors. Otherwise, I think that Colin is putting all of this info on the website in the next few days. Best regards,

Colin I am interested in how you do your sector analysis in trading diary. You have highlighted sectors that are at different stages in the last diary. What sort of chart & what time period do you look at to determine what Weinstein stage the sector is at? Also: 1)You have referred to the new sectors in your report, but we don't (through incredible charts) seem to have access to these to do our charts & sector analysis. When will this be available? 2)Should we be doing a comparison to the ASX200 rather than the all ordinaries? 3)Once we have identified a sector about (or in) stage 2, how do we identify the stocks that make up that sector - particularly higher cap stocks Thanks for all your help Ken

Ken Incredible Charts version 4.0.0.2 will have the new ASX 200 sector files (watchlist and project file). It is due to be released at the end of this week. I normally use 3-year charts to analyze sector indices but the new ASX indices only have 1 years history. The new sector files compare each index to the ASX 200 - it makes more sense than to compare to the All Ords. To identify all stocks in a sector, use the stock screen. Select the sector/industry that you are interested in, then click SUBMIT. Colin
