Colin if the following post is out of order please delete IC forum Members your opinion is appreciated The weekly stock pick has continued to exist because people enter to enjoy the challenge and subsequent forum activity that it creates. I would like to propose a request to management a possible marketing exercise that has the potential to increase the numbers for the comp as well as sell the IC product. This request is for the quarter/half yearly winner to receive a years subscription to the premium version of IC. Obviously the main concern would be for the accurate collection of the results each week. At this point in time this work has been supported by just a few and there has always been acceptance generally of the results posted. Whether it all becomes to hard because of the possible increase of numbers remains to be discussed, but I would appreciate any reaction to the proposal that may be productive. Thanks in advance G

Gohard, Thank you for the suggestion. I have been giving it some thought. It would require some development, but a competition that closely simulates live trading would be an excellent training tool for newcomers. The downside is that they may pick up bad habits: going for the spectacular rather than adopting a consistent low-risk trading plan. In a competition the focus is on the winner who makes the highest return, whereas in real life the most successful traders concentrate on minimizing risk, making steady if unspectacular returns, and protecting their capital. Any ideas on how to structure a competition to reward this? Regards, Colin

Hi all, First time I noticed this, I have an Idea that roughly goes like this, Competition over thirteen weeks, choose five stocks, 3 of the stocks must come from the top 300, the other two can come from the XAO. Over the thirteen weeks you may stop out 5 times only. this will allow you to completely change your portfolio but the ratio must remain the same. Stop out can only occur on end of day, and must be accompanied by a replacement that will start from open of the next day. I think this will keep the interest alive as not every one will excercise thier right to stop out at the same time. The competition results are only posted on the weekend, allowing the administrator/s a bit of a life. A list of stocks may possibly be a link in the rules such as I have for the shorts. Any expansion or completely different ideas welcome. Cheers and good Trading Bluedog

I can't see the logic in the Deaf Dumb and Blind inclusion of the "Must" have Top 300's in everyones' portfolio If weight is some form of advantage Maybe we should just all weigh our wives and the heaviest one WINS! Salute and Gods' speed

I like the idea as well, My suggestion would be all stocks must be over a dollar or two. (Message edited by tbreak on November 30, 2007)

Why?
PS: This debate will come to nothing if we don't respect the ASX rules of entry All are judged to be sea-worthy at the start by the ASX otherwise they would not be admitted into this eite class What makes you think you can tinker with the realities of what constitutes an ASX stock (Message edited by captain_chaza on November 30, 2007)

There are plenty of "stock picking" competitions/simulators all over the net. An alternative that would be more unique and probably provide better training is a competition where the stock is dictated and participants have to nominate long, short or abstain. The nominated Stock could be changed periodically to give exposure from pennies through to blue caps or even indices, commodities or currencies. Timeframe would probably need to be daily rather than intra-day to make it manageable.

Since the idea behind this is to promote IC , I would presume all Entry/Exits and Analysis would have to be restricted only to TOOLS available within IC -- hence you would have to explain WHY with IC tools only --- hence no Proprietary Tools , but would not see a problem with proprietary methods as long as they where explained and can be incoroperated in IC as it stands . As I was under the impression one the main purposes of the Wkly Comp was (a) a Learning exercise for others and (b) a sharing of ideas --- maybe points lost or allocated for the actual analysis presented -- whether it worked or not (after all it's a probability game ) -- but please no judging of Analysis on US based rules -- keep the T/A rules Aussie based -- we might actually come up with something unique ! If there is a concern about picking up bad habits by trying to pick outliers , then the same the same points/handicap system could be applied for consistency --- I know in my own trading i seek consistent results rather than a windfall. As it is a IC promotion part of the Analysis must include the IC Scan Settings that where used -- otherwise explain how u came across the Set Up (tipster, newsletter , watchlist etc )--- whilst remembering that other software scans are not permitted . just a few suggestions Cheers .

Thanks Colin for responding to my suggestion. There are certainly variable criteria examples we will look at to allow fair results based on the buyers skills in TA. Initially my response it to work through the 12 individual sectors using three per quarter locking in one week to make the decisions and each one running for four weeks per sector thus covering the whole ASX. Rather a daunting task for the information administrators , otherwise limits will have to be agreed upon to reduce the workload. Depending on your generosity in the sponsorship area quarterly results would add to the challenge to get it right as per our present weekly comp. Locked in buys are obviously the answer, which wouldn't suit all traders. KISS is the answer, trusting people to self administer the portfolio is a possible answer. The quarterly link proposed by BD has merit in confirming the codes involved for the period. Is it possible to prepare a downloadable IC spreadsheet to be returned to the control at the end of the period practicable. Thinking further at this stage thanks to all who have responded. Early new year looks the go for the possible start time. Have fun G

I think the Concept of this Weekly Comp should be ditched all together. Each individual should post separately in new threads their Actual Real Trades.Too often this Comp is the only time people post and on several occasions people have Won but then announce they Never Held the Share!! I have reservations that this Comp has much educational value. For example there is Nothing on Exit Strategy. There is just an Assumption that one held 'til Friday,Gained 25% or so but there's no saying this winning percent didn't get ACTUALLY "lost" in the Real World of the following week. No the Friday Percent gets Compounded into this Quarterly Overall Tally and Competitors are supposed to be Awed by what Might have been, not Reality. Anyway,I'm withdrawing from this Weekly Comp.I'm thinking of getting money back OUT not plotting how to put more In. But some thing for Colin to consider is 1]Time Delay on new posters automatically lifted if say a Share with Chart is discussed. 2]Paying the Score Keeper with a 6mth premium package for their work 3]6 mth free premium package for the Most Improved Poster on whatever criteria, voted on by whoever. cheers.
Even 'til Jaded. Dig for the sake of it.

Ahoy Sea-Dog Duggie Once again it seems to me you have lost the plot Getting off to a "Good start" is what the Weekly Comp is/was all about It was never designed by Officer Sticks to do anything else Including marketing IC It was just designed as a learing platform There are only 5 opening opportunities presented to us during the week Monday-Friday Monday' open after a week-end of hard research is all this Open regatta was all about I have learnt heaps and I am saddened to hear you have not Salute and Gods' speed
When the Going gets tough the tough get going! Don't forget it takes the same Preparation /time each day to get set each day of the week for the OPEN Monday to Friday Preparing for the Monday Open is what I do every week-end PPS: Preparation is Everything in the Long Term However Anyone who says they can see into the Longer Term frames is either a Liar or a Fool IMHO Crikey! Anything can happen and usually does! Crikey! I have enough trouble seeing what is install for me just over the horizon Leave alone what is install for me months ahead Captain Empty-Head might not be the smartest Man of the Sea but I do pride myself as not being the Dumbest and fool myself into Long-Range Sea and Weather forecasting Take it for what it is worth? The most succesful sites have ditched the Long Term threads as useless Garbage and excuses only a mother would believe Garbage in > Garbage out Surely this Greatest Sport of All is ALL about Each Financial year? With regard to marketing The Product will market itself by Word of mouth No freebies will ever market anything unless it has real value and at least ONE step ahead of it peers
