Welcome aboard Sea-Cadet Davo Sailing the ASX on the Good Ship is certainly not for the faint hearted We let the wind call the tune and change our plans as the sea and weather conditions dictate Some are quite quick and exciting tacking duels NE Others are not so good but always remember Everybody gets sea-sick and in the Captain's case It is everyday! But it is the Greatest Sport of All and you may one day discover why this Captain is addicted to sailing under a full spread of sail Presented into the wind she can be very fast But Unfortunately at times not fast enough and we drift SE These sails are then declared Long term investments to be sorted out at Tax time Good luck and hope you have lots of fun The food is ample The comradory is brilliant You will never see anything like it on land
Well done crew The PDN - UCL tack this morning seems to have been a good one "at the moment" Sorry Sea-Cadet Nicola but I thought the GGP was better value $ for $ than the MOS this morning (Message edited by Captain_Chaza on March 11, 2004)

Ahoy Julles PSR did not even hit my radar screen, nice % move. Mainly hitting the big fish, WMR, TLS, for a few cents. Got a bit out of MIA and IBA. 10 days ahead of budget, but as you know playing this game you end up south just as quick. Hope your life is returning to normal, and you keep up your excellent posts, they are one bright spot in my day and sometimes late at night. I might not post much, but always reading the goings on. Ahoy party girl SusieQ, is the Sunday Breaky thing a goer. Cheers to all the Sailors. Might have me an ale while the going is good. Scalper

Scalper Grab an ale for me too while you're heading to the fridge. The brekky thingy. Thrashed the idea around a bit more and basically think now I would be duplicating what others are already doing eg Chris Tate is a guest speaker at the ATAA meeting this month and Louise Bedford next month. The group seem happy with the present meeting format, maybe not rock the boat? We can institute the stock pick idea fairly easily. Just need someone cluey to do the numbers each month. cheers SusieQ

Ahoy Cheer leader Cadet-Officer SQ What's a stock pick idea???? Sounds OK in principle but please remember your Old Brave and Loyal Skipper The word discipline may bring visions of a drill sergeant, but in reality it covers all systems by which the efforts of one or several people can be directed to a common goal. Sailing the ASX and in team sports of any type discipline is essential for the efficiency, happiness and the eventual achievement of the common goal. Where time matters little, there may be ample opportunity for all to discuss the best means of achieving the goal. When events move fast or danger is imminent, decisions must be immediate. Whether these decisions are made one way or another, discipline entails that once made they are obeyed loyally and promptly. Many systems of discipline have been tried out over the centuries that man has sailed the high seas, yet all have failed unless complete and ultimate responsibility for the actions of the crew is vested in one man. At sea this one man is known as the captain, the master or in small yachts usually the skipper. Even in the case of identical twins who do not accept the concept of one being appointed skipper in time of emergency the cream will rise to the top and the appropriate actions will be allocated by the most competent and natural leader of the two. At sea on the ASX the skipper’s responsibility is complete and his orders are law to those aboard. The enthusiasm with which they carry out the order will depend on his powers of leadership and to the inner qualities of the crew’s commitment to success and excellence. In times of crisis or difficulty a man’s actions are controlled largely by habit and to an even larger extent by emotion. Reason and logic surprisingly playing a far smaller direct part than most people would expect. Any such sailing technique that eliminates the human emotion and habits, must then be studied and researched fully and judged for its merits. Monomacho seems a far removed word from seamanship of the ASX but it’s meaning is not. It is a common failing amongst skippers in small craft and big ones to try and fight the battle single -handed, whether it is a battle against the elements of the prevailing climactic patterns, seasonal currents and tides or against some well known, jealous and competitive ocean racing rival or neighbour. He may attempt to do too much himself and try to supervise every detail personally without delegating the job whilst he is totally immersed in and obscured by a huge mass of detail. A debating Society is great fun on land but I don't think it would work at sea on any exchange Captain Chaza

CC The stock pick idea was really for the SE Traders group thread, not this one, I misposted in answering Scalper. A worthy competition for the group to pit their skills upon. The traders group is made up of some crew and many more, not sailing the heavy seas each day. You are quite right re your comments on leadership discipline and strategy. All leaders, good and bad, have two things in common. 1. A strongly held vision they are able to articulate and communicate, combined with a strong determination to succeed. 2. And followers. ( There being no leaders without any followers, either of free will or by organisational structure. Even in organisational structure, leaders who do not have the faith and belief of the employees/shareholders will face a revolt of some kind leading to a breakdown in morale, company culture and possible deposement. Two recent CEO names spring to mind being Gilbertson of BHP, being deposed by the board and Frankie of the NAB who fell on his own sword) There can be no shared leadership. In absence of strong leadership, companies, community groups, governments etc tend to drift along with wishy washy decision making and indecision. Thus on any ship there is only one captain and it is he, who goes down with the ship, as all results are directly because of the captain's decisions alone. Team work is vital, delegation essential, if all tasks are to be completed in an orderly and timely fashion, but without leadership none of these would be done. There would be a meeting over every decision!! Fear not, dear captain, the stock pick idea is not for the Incredulous!! although potential sail suggestions are very welcomed as all the crew are aware. I like the look of SNN, but didnt have the strength ( cash) to hoist today cheers SusieQ
