Captain,

Here is the Lumberjacks Class for comparison. Note that the source data is unadjusted! This causes some big changes at times. I think that is why the index jumped in Mar 04. That is why the MA's are like they are.

Interesting to compare all three back to 1997:

Captain,

All the above indexes have been calculated from Jan 1997, with an arbitrary starting point of 1000.

Each day the percentage change of each stock in the index is accumulated, but only if there is data for that stock. Obviously, the further we go back, the less stocks are in each index.

As I said earlier, the data is unadjusted. Do you think that is a problem for comparisons of trends over the last 12 months?

Does anyone have a source of adjusted data that I can download automatically each night?

Captain, please tell me if this is of use, and if so, which classes of sails to use. Maybe if we can have a definitive list posted as a summary. If it is of value I will continue with the project and automate it more. Maybe I can then post the data files say weekly?

Regards,
Starb'd

All is forgiven Ann, thanks for taking responsibility for what you said. I believe you're a courageous enough sailor to do the same to our 1st mate spids. The Captain will tell you courage is prerequsite to becoming an officer. Wanna try?

Hello Starboard Officer,

Congratulations on the index production, however I am wondering if there is a calculation error somewhere - I would have expected oil to double over the last year, and nothing gets over a 17% rise. Are you possibly putting a 1% rise as a rise of 1 in 1000 in the index?

A 1% rise should make a move from 1000 to 1010.

Comments?

Ken

Captain and Ken,

There is indeed a calculation error that I am working on right now to fix. It appears that I am not dividing by the number of stocks correctly. That has the effect of putting the index values higher for larger indexes. New version coming soon.

It takes a while to design and build new instruments. Please keep the feedback coming - it is the only way that we know whether we can rely on them.

Captain, I will make the change to 100 at the same time. I'm not sure that doubling the rations of rum will be good for my head - but I will give it a try!

Regards,
Starb'd

Ken,

What I am trying to achieve here is a completely new instrument. It is not to be compared to any of the other Indexes.
What I am attempting to show here on the chart is the rate of increase/decrease of a group of stocks (Class of sails). I am hoping this will help us to choose the best class of sail to have hoisted at any one time. I guess it would be something like showing the slope of a trendline drawn on the charts. The actual slope of a trendline is not something that you can guage with the eye - it depends on the scales of the x and y coordinates (i.e time and price). So it gets very hard to compare two stocks or two indexes to see which is giving a better return.

I am also trying to get rid of the weighting that is traditionally given to larger cap stocks, or higher priced stocks.

So, in fact, it won't show a "doubling" because it is not following the price.

Please keep up the feedback. I am not sure yet whether I am wasting my time or not.

Regards,
Starb'd

Captain,

The new "percentage" charts will be out soon. The individual classes will look very much the same. However, the comparison charts will be much more correct.

Do you see a value in this type of chart?

I am also in the process of producing more "normal" charts for out classes. I will use a "geometric" basis to try to reduce the influence of higher
