Ahoy Brave and Loyal crew

Now for the dreaded paperwork Ouch!

Does anyone know the best way of writing up the Logs
re: That stupid green sail "GIR" we hoisted @ 0.36 on the 29/09/2005

Those damn money hungry Landlubbers /cheats have redesigned her and
the data has been adjusted to read 0.32 on that day

Ahoy SCO Brains
Are you onboard or still on shore leave?

I will confirm all the prices during the week
Orders are automatically cancelled out at the EOD for not reaching
their limit or no liquidity

Others the Captain chased up and learnt another lesson the hard way
"for the 42nd time" this time
Strange how "It always seems to look like a good idea at the time"

Salute for now

Ahoy Brave and Loyal crew

The Captain has been going through his old notes in an effort to turn the ship around and get back on our NE'ly Course

"a fine ocean-going type"

ASX Ocean Tide

The expression “a fine ocean-going type” is used frequently by yachtsmen. Often it refers to vessels with very heavy displacements and so clumsy that their ocean going ability is limited.

It is much more likely that there is
“an ocean-going type of man,” who will make successful voyages in any sound vessel, than any special type of vessel alone is suited on the ASX.

The in-form skipper will passport to more seaworthy and better performing yachts and even sometimes stay ashore and take a well earned rest.

For successful ocean racing a craft must be fit to suffer strong gales, even storms with over 70 knot wind speeds and exceptionally high waves. This may sound all too easy and sometimes it is.

However a voyage on any ocean will always show up any weakness in the hull and riggings, but more importantly when there is a weakness in the skipper and crew, she will be merciless.

Men have been lost at sea even in tall ships where ocean chart records show “Storms almost unknown.” The skipper and his crew must always be prepared to abandon ship

The skipper always find this a most difficult task as traditionally the humiliation back on land is considered worse and inevitably goes down with the ship. Hence the secretive nature of this great sport.

No one can foretell when the trials will come, so right from the start the skipper must be able to rely implicitly on the condition of the craft, her fittings onboard and take regular sightings at least one week at a time. No one can forecast future prices in any arena whether it is in real estate, commodities or stocks and shares. Similarly, no one can forecast future sea and weather conditions you could bank on.

Before a man sets out for a cruise on the ASX he must have a good deal of knowledge about a great number of subjects. Some for instance have set out with the confidence of getting a feel for things and learning certain aspects on the way.

This might be a reasonable risk if one is lucky, but there is no room for him sailing the ASX these days as luck often seems to run out in the long term for so many of our magnificent Tall Ships.

Ideally one should select a vessel fit to carry out the voyage contemplated pleasurably and as comfortable as possible from start to finish. Very few have the good fortune to do this. Often it simply comes down to taking advantage of the shifting wind gusts, ignoring long range weather forecasters and cutting lose any dragging wet sail.

The requirements of any sailing ship in deep waters whatever the purpose of her cruise and size, can be reduced to one essential factor.

Seaworthiness

How she handles the effects of wind and sea.

Some skippers will quickly appreciate the aid and value of navigational instruments with only a few practice drills. Some will no doubt need to do many more.

The diligent student of the sea, the one who is ever on the improve will do many practice drills particularly if a polished performance to a racing standard is the eventual aim.

Master the basics of seamanship “in the mind” and then learn to trust the navigational instrumentation you select to have on board, you will be able to navigate instinctively without hesitation, gain ground on any fierce competitor and enjoy the thrill of winning many more trophies.

" The 4 Basic Sail Drills"

WAIT Patiently for favourable Sea and weather conditions
SET SAILS in quick time
HOLD on tight
RUN for Shelter on the first sight of bad conditions

No sport is more magnificent than deep water sailing on the ASX in all types of weather. None requires more courage and such a sustained effort of both body and mind. Nor does any put on offer more splendid trophies and prize money.

The key to all weather handling of any sized yacht is careful preparation beforehand and the severest simplicity when the time for action arrives, and then to act instinctively without hesitation.

The safety of his craft and crew must always be the skippers first consideration. When sailing off-shore the chief difficulty lies in judging the correct moment when legitimate hard and exhilarating sailing becomes recklessness.

This judgement requires seamanship disciplines and courage of the highest degree that unfortunately is not given to everyone.

It is difficult to remember, "Safety at sea is Paramount".

The pleasure of a cruise whether it is a way of life upon the sea or a convenient way of visiting interesting places can be almost unlimited; yet equally the discomforts can be quite horrifying. The difference between these two extremes depends on seamanship, the art of living upon the sea.

Seamanship, with its very widely differing interpretations of set information, facts, weather, wind and sea, is the nemesis of all skippers who set out sailing the ASX.

Perfection in this art depends not only upon the setting-out preparations but more importantly to the extent of holding a firm course and the skipper’s navigational skills, the art of getting from one place to another.

It is a skippers folly to ignore the experience of others and even forget his own past experiences.

He must set in place a plan of action designed to avoid being locked into a bad and dangerous gale finding himself and his crew too far off-shore and the safety of land. Not only ruining the pleasure of the cruise for all, but more importantly missing out on the many other pleasurable opportunities that exist elsewhere on ASX.

In this highest of high-tech arenas, with all the yacht clubs now communicating with each other in real time, it must be remembered that for every bullish skipper heading north, there is one bearish skipper setting out a southerly coarse.

Who is the one with the better seamanship skills?

While a sailing ship of any size and design may have great fundamentals, it just doesn't make sense to set sail on her if she is caught up in a storm and is in angry seas, until there is some evidence of improving conditions.

Similarly, it doesn’t make sense to jump off a perfectly sea-going vessel because of some old sailors tale of a successful percentage gain he found worked ages ago.

Believe me old sailors only talk about their victories and leave their failed attempts in the bottom draw for their children and grandchildren to read.

Salute for now and
Bon Voyage and Gods speed
