Help me help The Smith Family

I'll be riding in Around the Bay in a Day 2010 to raise funds to help disadvantaged Australian children get support through The Smith Family's education and learning programs.

Only riding 50 Ks of the Round the Bay ride. What with a wrist afflicted by repetitive strain injury from repeatedly falling off my bike and a torn meniscus ligament in the left knee as well as a loving wife who thinks I am a maniac, that's all I will be able to cope with.
I am not just any maniac; I am a Romaniac !

Click on the website above. Donations can be sent directly to the Smith Family and tax deductible receipts issued.
Last year you guys made me the 16th highest "earner".
I wish to thank you again for that.
Maybe Seahound can show he cares for homeless kids also, not just retired captains.
I thank thee all in advance.

IC readers cannot help but note that Peter Hersch:

1. is unable to keep his bike upright
2. has a wife troubled by his grandiose and expansive manias
3. owns a body that is cactus
4. has lost his ability to physically cope
5. is a clapped out chartist lost in the minutiae of Elliot wave astrology, and tea leaf reading predictions.

But we also note he is pragmatic and down-to-earth at achieving good works. Bravo. He deserves our fulsome and expansive support. In this rare and excellent instance, I have given my support to this wreck of a man.

We ask Admiral Chazza to announce to us a few trades on which he his going to donate the profits, in support of Herschy's body going 50 kms on October 17 for The Smith Family, and its support of disadvantaged Australian children.

Charles, we know Herschy is a chronically limited landlubber, with a soul bereft, indeed resistant to, the mysteries and wonders of the sea. But in this instance we see him striving with strong determination and effort for the benefit of his fellows. Lets overlook his land-locked limitations, and support his efforts for disadvantaged kids to the full.

Go Charles!

Go Herschy! Do not wobble! Keep that bl**dy bike upright. Tough body, tough mind, never to yield!

Seahound

I have received, or should I say the Smith Family has received another anonymous donation of $500.

You know who you are, I don't but I thank you very, very much !

Still need to find $950 to reach my target.

Congratulations Hershy - may the wind be behind you!

I put in my entry for Around the Bay some time ago but in early July I hurt my knee and have been off the bike ever since. I'm hoping to start some gentle riding again next week but it's becoming clear that I won't have enough time to build up a sufficient level of fitness in the remaining 4-5 weeks.

I may end up starting but with the intention of pulling out at the halfway mark? When I get my jersey I'll notify the number so that anyone who sees me enroute can say hello

G'day Rover,
Sorry about your knee.
Please post your number I shall look for you.
When I have my number I will post it.

I have found Glucosamine to be quite beneficial.
Have a speedy recovery.

I've now had a few short rides on the mountain bike and seem to be progressing OK (Haven't tried the road bike yet). The knee is just a little tender but nothing like the problem it was before. However, it's painfully obvious that I've lost a lot of fitness and would not make even half distance.

Consequently, I've decided not to attempt a start this Sunday and will try again next year. Looks like I've bought myself a very expensive jersey

I hope all goes well for you with blue skies and a tailwind.

Hi Red,
Are you well enough to ride this year?
I've just signed up for the 10o k ride and I ride at an average speed of 25Kph.
I'll do the Melbourne/Frankston/Melbourne leg.

http://aroundthebayfundraising.com.au/?PeterHersch

As usual, I am looking for donations for the disadvantaged children in our own country. I want to take my grandson to join me on the ride but his mother won't let him go as he is only 9 days old today.

Have raised $135 so far. Seahound has been most generous, thank you. Trying to get my employer to sponsor me but those wheels turn very slowly.
Still looking for contributions.
This year I am riding with torn meniscus in both knees and rotator cuffs on both shoulders.
I have repetitive strain injuries from repeatedly falling off the bike but one has to have a goal, no ?

Oh the pain, the pain !

Sorry for taking so long to reply. I haven't been browsing the forums for a while but the recent insanity spurred me on to have a look to see if there was anything here that could help me understand the wild ups & downs.

Thanks for your interest. Yes, I'm still riding OK (although on a reduced winter mileage) and looking forward to some better weather. I haven't yet made an entry for this year's event and unless something changes my mind (again) I probably won't go. The main reason being that most of my regular riding companions (who have done it before) are all talking me out of it on the grounds that it is just too crowded.

Here's a link to a video of one of my recent rides -
