It as been said by many commentators in recent months that unless retail companies have a presence online, they will die at a quicker rate than those who don't. Well if that is the case then yesterday JB-HI result will have a lot of CEO running around like headless chucks the past 24 hours.

JB Hi-Fi's informed the market yesterday that half year profits will be around 5 per cent down on last year - this was a shock to most as it had been expecting profits to rise by 5 per cent. Consequently the stocks price close 13% down which also had an affect on other retailers share price falling.

Challenge for retailers is how to capture % of the online markets without alienating/damaging their regional branch/agent operations.

Particularly with franchise operations, will this require profit sharing from online sales ?

Billabong International shares have plunged by more than 30 per cent after it forecast a decline in earnings for the first half of the current financial year.

The surf wear manufacturer and retailer's stock plunged to $2.03 today.

It was the lowest close and largest one-day fall in the history of the stock, which now sits below the issue price of $3.15 when Billabong floated in August 2000.

At least if you had bought them when they were issued and you still had them, then at least you have had $3.50+ in dividends since.........

Myer management (as well as other retail bosses) will be hoping that customers will shrug off recent pessimism about next year and use their credit card and spend BIG.....

Myers chart as reached a support line on its daily chart but I'm not too optimistic that it will hold in the near term...
