The figures in red or blue reflect the sector strength for the past week (last 5 trading days) and will vary between -100 and +100.
I have normalised each sector by multiplying the result of NH's minus NL's by 100 and then divided by the number of stocks in each sector.
eg the figure of 15 for Financials was derived from the formula (7-1)*100/40

Sectors 52 w NH NL past 5 days

Market predictions are about as accurate as a broken clock.

i can but it is not very pretty when it shrinks the chart to the forum
better to do it on IC and you can click them on and off and see what is going on

msparks, I think you have your "Save chart as image" set to 650 x 350.
Colin has recently increased that size to 900 x 600
You can set it by selecting 'File' then 'Set Image size' then set width to 900 then Height to 600
The chart image is much clearer..

Thanks
That is a great chart

Shows everything very clearly

Telecoms used to be at the bottom like Energy is now for years, telecoms is basically TLS anyway

Healthcare is the clear winner

I wonder how long until the small ords catches up ? It used to outperform the index.

Thanks Colin,
Could you do the same for another thread I started 'Index 52 week New Highs/New Lows' & rename it 'ASX Indices' ? https://forum.incrediblecharts.com/messages/7/4591068.html
I'd like to include the Index comparison charts etc in that thread.
Cheers
Shady

Most of the Banks are coming up to their exdividend dates in May & then the property trusts go exdiv in June, a possible reason for the financial sector's outperformance over the last few weeks, with all other sectors going sideways or down.

Hopefully things are near their lows..

C Discret - Spent after the May sales
c Staples - Stale
Energy - Last one to leave turn out the lights
Financials - Broke
Fin-x-Reit - Broker
Health - Call the doctor
Industrials - Not working
Info Tech - Keeps crashing, call the I.T. guy
Materials - Washed out
REITs - Property wealth not trickling down
Telecoms - Somebody cut the cable?
Utilities - peaks near dividend time & that's Mar/Sept or Dec/June.

Got gold?

Love the commentary
Call the doctor, call the IT guy!

But seriously it looks like Staples and info tech are performing well.

Strange that staples are going so strong - the chart looks otherwise

Would it be possible to get the excel document, I could make a histogram.

Talk soon

I intend paying much more attention to industry group breakouts and support areas.

Hi Dydavo, I do my Index & Sector analysis every week for my own understanding of what the components of the Market are doing.
I'm pleased to see someone is interested in what the Market is actually doing rather than reading pointless mostly regurgitated market predictions which have the same chance as a coin toss.

Indeed. Thanks for the feedback.

Following the changes in relative sector strength seems an important process, and I have not been doing it enough, despite being in the trading business for 13 years. My process now is to regularly review the charts of the 24 ASX 300 Industry Groups, and your weekly contributions will nicely complement my endeavours to follow the money.
Those groups are listed here for anyone interested.

Hi Dydavo & shadetreetrader,

The work that you have done on ASX Sectors (& even work on ASX Industry Groups & Commodities - base metals/oil) are useful approaches to have in the traders toolbox, but I have never found the information in this thread user friendly: it is not the way that I look to analyzing the market. In many ways it looks like the Weinstein approach is your "bread and butter" STT (and probably you too Dydavo).

Weinstein's book Secrets for profiting in bull and bear markets provides guidance in sector analysis (and other) tools to increase probability of success when trading - precis of book located here. <http://www.beursonline.nl/forum/upload/2012/6160228.pdf>

To quote Stan: “Over the years, it has become obvious to me that the more mechanical I’ve made my system and the less subject to judgements and emotions, the more profitable it has become.” Sounds like an outcome we all are looking for!

I'm sure that the successful implementation of sector analysis and other Weinstein tools in the buying/selling process may well reduce risk in the trading/investing process, and if implemented successfully provide a more profitable outcome.

I for one will try to use your scans and fit them into my market analysis - so I appreciate the effort you put into these task/s.

Happy trading DYOR

Hi tryhay, no, my approach has got nothing to do with Weinstein.

An ideal Weinstein long trade would be to buy low at the end of stage 1 & sell high at the end of stage 2 as per http://financialindependent.blogspot.com.au/2011/09/4-stages-of-stock-market-cyc le-so-what.html

(Incidentally Weinstein used a weighted moving average not a simple moving average nor an exponential moving average.)

My weekly trading method is to buy high & sell higher, using new 52 week highs and new all time highs (ATH's)

This has got nothing to do with Weinstein stage analysis.

My posts should not be taken as stock recommendations or advice.

Hi Tryhay,
I did read a Mr Weinstin book about 12 years ago. I then loaned it, and never saw it again. I have a 200 ema on charts just to orient price, but I don't look specifically for stage 1 breakouts. I am mostly just looking for HH and HL, I guess some of Weinstein stuck, especially the point about increased volumes at the breakouts, but that is about it.

Thanks for the feedback. Any suggestions for refinement of my contributions on sector, commodity or industry group TA are gratefully received. I think we have all been using IC though thick and thin for a decade or more! In the meantime, FTSE going beserk tonight, and another good day beckons tomorrow.

STT & dydavo,

I am sorry if my characterization of your share trading approach is incorrect: I have used the acronym BTFATH to describe your weekly buys previously STT; but in the sense of you're using sector analysis there is some apparent alignment with the Weinstein approach IMO. Perhaps whether the Moving average is Weighted, Exponential or Simple is of some import on weekly charts, but I am tempted to view that comment as your personal preference (particularly when the internet reports all as options available to use related to weinstein) ...

Weinstein's buying checklist suggests that one should "Scan the industry groups that look best technically" - I had assumed that you guys were posting the information in these thread/s (ASX Sectors, & even work on ASX Industry Groups & Commodities - base metals/oil) to assist in the selection of the strongest sectors for your target stock/s? The rationale is not clear upon scanning the content of the threads IMO.

I agree dydavo that we look to be in for another short squeeze rally - I wonder if price action will break through resistance this time???

Happy trading the pop.

Happy trading DYOR

tryhay, Weinstein is just one of many well known/published traders that recommend a long trading approach that involves trading with the best performing Sectors/Industry groups, it's just commonsense.

Incredible Charts uses the weighted moving average to describe the Weinstein method http://www.incrediblecharts.com/technical/breakout_model.php

I would expect that the charts in Weinsteins books use the weighted moving average, don't make me get them out, I'm allergic to dust.

I understand that using the 30w weighted ma is roughly equivalent to the 21 week exponential moving average when comparing backtested results.

I have read many trading books, some of the Australian authors on my bookshelf in random order are Penfold, D Guppy, A Hull, M Lally, L Bedford, C Nicholson, R Kinsky, A Trench & T Judge, S McPhee, W S Harper, C Thornton, R Meani, R Bennetts, J Sammon, C Davey, M Roth, M Sincere & D Wagner.
I have & have read far more US & UK based author's books.
The Weinstein method is no better or worse than any other system.

The long & short of it all is:

It's not the system that matters.

It's trade management/risk management that determines profitability.

Hi Guys,

Great thread.

Certainly we all have our individual trading methods, systems or styles. For my part I have experimented with purely mechanical to purely discretionary and landed (at the present time) on a hybrid.

Dr. Alexander Elder wrote a terrific follow up to his original work titled Come Into My Trading Room.

In that book (Chapter 6 – Trading) he says ..".. In my experience, system traders tend to achieve more consistent results, but the best and most successful traders use the discretionary approach.”

His opinion is that often times what he calls “amateurs” are frightened of the market (wall of worry etc.) and feel relieved that a system is making all the decisions. The autopilot approach (even with extensive back testing) simply cannot codify all the market nuances and across all the sectors – given the market(s) tend to evolve.

Hence a static system will inevitably fail at some time.

This bit I found interesting .."..A discretionary trader takes market information and analyses it using several technical tools. He is likely to shift and apply somewhat different tools to different markets at different times. His decision tree has many branches and he follows them at different times as market conditions change…”

I found your relative sector performance charts very useful – is there any chance you could update them and re-publish?

Broadly what I do is look at the secular time frame to calibrate my opinions on Bearish / Bullish sentiment.

I use the broad indices and the coppock oscillator to help me.

The goal of this indicator is to identify long-term buying opportunities in the S&P 500, Dow, XJO etc. The signal is very simple. Coppock used monthly data to identify buying opportunities when the indicator moves from negative territory to positive territory. Although Coppock did not use it for sell signals, many technical analysts consider a cross from positive to negative territory as a sell signal – I don’t, preferring other approaches to get me out of the individual positions I am in.

Here is a chart of S&P 500 – Maybe heresy here – Monthly Data. The Coppock is the red curve at the top of the chart

S&P 500

The Coppock barked in Jan 2010 (vertical blue line) and has suggested we remain effectively long (secular wise) since then.

Over the same period we can look at the XJO

XJO

Here Coppock barked in late 2009, but we had some choppy action to next signal on 30/11/2012.

Given AUS is approx. 2% of the world markets, I start secular scanning with the bigger guys and then “drill down” into AUS given that we are affected by the broader macro-economic world, sometimes to a lesser degree, other times greater.

What got me very interested in your thread is that I am net long and overweight in AUS.

Tryhay’s observation that trade management/risk management is key is something I 100% agree with.

So given what I am seeing at the big-picture level, I am trying to get my head around which are the sectors in AUS where I will imminently take money off the table, and which are those that I can ride out longer – unless we get a complete market rout (Brexit, US interest rates, US elections, AUS elections etc).

That’s why I am very keen on an updated picture of your sector analysis Shadetreetrader, it would be of (timely) use to me.

Once again, great discussion guys

Regards
Muzza

Correcting an error

When I attributed the quote about Trade & Risk Management - I attributed it to the wrong person -- apologies.

The line "Tryhay’s observation that trade management/risk management is key is something I 100% agree with" should read "Shadetreetrader's observation that trade management/risk management is key is something I 100% agree with".

Just correcting the record!

Hi Muzza, I hope this table is sufficient, I don't do the sector comparison charts (as in post 423 above) anymore as the result you get depends on the time frame for the comparison.
Same as I don't use indicators that have a variable period as you will get get totally different results when you vary the time period.

Sector NHNLs 20160626
Property & Gold appear to be the strongest sectors.

Hi dydavo,

I have been distracted with family issues recently but have been following the threads some-what.

I see that you are forming a bullish POV on the metals and mining index (and apparently on M&M equities as well). You have provided daily charts to support this view.

If there is any value in the "Triple Screen Approach" (a la Elder et al) then a consideration of the longer term chart/s may well be of some value (similar to Muzza above).

FWIW in an attempt to capture the full "Breakout Model" I found it necessary to use the Monthly and Weekly charts show below:

Monthly chart: Price action in downtrend under the longer term MAs, with MACD in negative territory.

monthly

Weekly chart: PA has been in a downtrend channel for five (5) years and had a fake out move (through the support) the beginning of this year. The MACD is in positive territory - with some negative divergence on the histogram.

weekly

The Daily chart: PA has just broken out of the down-trending channel, the MACD is in positive territory, and there may well be an inverse H&S setting up (looks like a bit more work before it plays out); look for a sharp increase in volume on the break above the neckline.....

Daily

Really not sure what the outcome will be but still worth playing individual set up/s as appropriate IMO

Happy trading DYOR

Thanks for that feedback tryhay. I can see the logic in your argument that the new uptrend in ASX metals and Mining sector might not yet be confirmed. It won't be long before we know, one way or the other.
I guess I am wedded to stocks moving fastest in the sector/s with the best relative performances over the last 2 months. I'll have a look at the weekly and monthly MACD etc to see if they add to my decision making process.

Cheers

ASX 300 metals and mining maintaining its uptrend imho. Long several gold and Li stocks, plus others as in attached list.
Some will remember "snifter" on this forum. Snifter was a devotee of ADX > 27 for entries/positions. I have just concluded that the 10 day ADX above 22 looks like a strong enough uptrend to get my attention, esp if new highs are or have been recently achieved, and selling is weak during a subsequent consolidation. Future entries are unlikely to contradict that, unless I am trying to buy bounces off a bottom of course.

Peter - AFY about 8 July is an example!

Have a good week.

Agreed dydavo -- XMM is looking strong on the weekly chart as well.

12 week EMA above the 26, and separating.
The Index level is nudging the 26 wk EMA of the HIGH + 2xATR

Typically when this happens one would expect to see some form of retracement ...ideally one that respects the longer term MAs. And if we get that it would be solid (re)confirmation of a very healthy uptrend.

Yes I remember Snifters posts very well, and have some of them archived to review / "study". Those traders - Snifter, Spider, Bundy, Shawky certainly were very generous in sharing their approaches and insights into their methodologies.

Keep up the good work mate, its most appreciated

regards
Muzza

I really did not have much clue 13 years ago!

Thanks QED, unfortunately I can't do the tables properly for the Industry Groups because Incredible Charts only seems to have daily close data not OHLC daily data.
If this changes in the future then I will be able to do tables for the 24 Industry Groups.

Meanwhile my Sector Internals tables based on New Highs/New Lows can be used in conjunction with the previous trend tables.

XSSK Software and Services ASX Industry Group had a good week. Maybe another high volume at the top, as in late May?

Still holding many stocks in this Group.

Hi dydavo,
It's best to post your charts one under the other rather than side by side as it affects some peoples ability to easily view the thread using some devices.
(Just use the return/enter keyboard button after you've uploaded the first chart.)
Thanks
STT

Good Bar analysis of ASX Sectors....When you see this analysis it makes sense of a little phrase I once heard "If the band's playing a Waltz, don't dance the Fandango".... Great work STT!!

Thanks Gundy, I've increased the number of periods to reduce the granularity.
The greens should all be the same shade, but the posts were done after I'd had a few reds!
Just to be clear to everyone, the tables are a record of the current & past states, not a prediction which is a 50/50 proposition at best.

Indeed shadetreetrader. Your graphic helps to alert to the possibilities. Interesting that a couple of "defence" sectors such as XUT and REIT have had a couple of good weeks.
I noticed a couple it XIJ stocks come up on the radar this week, and took a long in Smartgroup Corp SIQ. Will be interesting to see how that sector performs next week, and tight stops required on XMM stocks on Monday.

Nice site here for sector rotation nerds like me.
Current SPX sector EPSG rates align nicely with your recent ASX200 graphic shadetreetrader.

http://insight.factset.com/

http://insight.factset.com/hubfs/Earnings%20Insight/EarningsInsight_121616.pdf

My conclusions.
1. Changes in SPX EPSG predict SPX change in price

2. Need to be overweight in these ASX sectors atm - Energy, IT, Financials

3. Take profits and Tight stops on ASX materials

4. Read about changes in sector EPSG more frequently at http://insight.factset.com/

I have found this thread takes a long time to load, probably because of all the charts and images, it might be better if the thread 'page' was shorter.

Thank you for your interesting analysis and links dydavo, contributions to this thread are always welcome.

I intend to expand the table analysis to Industry Groups at some stage in the future.

Clearly Financials is where it's at.
I thought the ASX Indices thread took a long time to load but this thread takes even longer, Colin or Robin please do something to fix this if you can.
