Hello defensives, Healthcare, REITs, Staples, Utilities and Gold.

Sectors a 110217
sectors b 110217

I changed the format, order & methodology on 21st Jan '17, so have only presented the last 4 weeks of 'Sector' trends.
The change results in more sideways and less positive/negative results, hopefully it's an improvement.

Hi shadetreetrader & dydavo,

I don't comment on this section of the forum much because I'm focused on other stuff, but I've had a go at analysing the reported "ASX Sectors 2017" data & compared it to the 2016 Oct quarter's reported data.

The results are skewed because some of the data are missing, but the point of this post is to observe that the "green" squares for both the material & metals & mining sector/s have at least halved from last quarter to this quarter (and so the red & orange squares have more than doubled). I guess that this suggests changing sentiment in the market & so one could keep a weather eye on any effects observed in equity price action. A heads up to that may be provided by the weekly and daily charts of those industry groups as well as the individual shares that one holds.

In January dydavo posted on a related thread to this (regarding metals & mining) and the breadcrumb/hyperlink is provided below.

https://forum.incrediblecharts.com/userscripts/forums/show.plx?tpc=7&post=183322

Below is the two recent quarters' data that shadetreetrader provides for our edification and amusement. In an effort to reproduce them here they are tiny, but the commentary should be large enough to provide the general idea (the doubling in negative sentiment) & if you looked further in this & dydavo's linked thread you would find the primary reference/s.

asx s

The weekly XMM chart has Stan's various phases overlaid on it - whether price action closely follows this structure only time will tell - but if there is value in Stan's approach then it is worth keeping an eye on the chart/s IMO.

daily

The daily XMM chart shows a potential rising wedge that looks complete with price action attempting to break resistance ATM (looks like potential bear flag territory).

daily

tryhay,

You cannot compare those 2 periods using my spreadsheets, because the analysis method was different for both periods as I stated above on 11th Feb, post # 826

That is why I started a new spreadsheet on that date and didn't continue the previous one.

The results for the first period would have been quite different had I used the analysis method which started in Jan 2017

You can't compare apples with oranges!

Hi shadetreetrader,

Thank you for your advice above - I should have looked more closely at this thread: I see that "The change (format, order & methodology) is expected to result in more sideways and less positive/negative results, hopefully it's an improvement". I take your point on "You can't compare apples with oranges!"

I guess you use this sector data like Stan does, & as expected the chart/s shown above suggest to me that there is a change occurring in sentiment in the "materials", and "metals & mining" sectors (quarter on quarter) and more broadly your comment on "Staples, Healthcare, Industrials & Utilities had a good week" is also supported by their respective charts.

I did note in another thread (Trade Entry/Exit - Dollar Cost Averaging) shown here: <https://forum.incrediblecharts.com/userscripts/forums/show.plx?tpc=12&post=183620> you chose GUD "No position, paper trade only for a fun learning experience". I think it is a useful case study in 'selecting the sector' and then choosing the share: XCDK looked to be breaking out of stage 1 & GUD is moving into blue sky! Chart/s are below for anyone interested.

GUD Weekly:

gud

XCDK Weekly:

xcdk

I wish you well with your endevours.

tryhay,

No I don't use Sector data like Stan does, as you suggest, my spreadsheets do not rely on lagging indicators and do not require hindsight to interpret the trend.

The GUD trade has got nothing to do with "selecting the sector and then choosing the share" as you suggest.

Muzza's thread and my posts on it are only concerned with scaling into a position, the sector had nothing to do with it, I could just as easily have chosen any other share in any other sector that was making new ATH's, like A2M in Staples, AGL in Utilities, ALL or CTD in Cons Discret, CGF or SDF in Financials, CPU in IT, CSL in Healthcare, GDI, RFF or UOS in RE, NHF in Financials, or SOL in Energy.

I don't know why you comment on my posts when you don't fully read the threads and seem to have little understanding of what they're about & try to relate everything back to Weinstein.

Hi shadetreetrader,

It would be a strange world if we were all approached trading the same! Alternative approaches to trading are valid, particularly as we bring different experience and personality etc. to the trading task. I see that our point of view relating to share trading is disparate and I don't see anything wrong with that.

I have not routinely commented on your threads this past year and I'm happy to butt out of your threads in future.

Regards

Happy trading DYOR
